Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. more ›

Weekend Music

Last week's high-profile, faux low-profile United States of Electronica show at the Comet should convince you to check them out at the Firehouse in Ballard Old Fire House in Redmond this weekend. Maybe this was supposed to be a Lashes show but now is an ersatz Lashes benefit due to Eric Howk's injury. more ›

Girls & Gods @ CHAC

Girls & Gods @ CHAC

When we were kids, we spent a lot of time reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology, soaking up heroic tales and Olympian feuds and tips on using hydraulic dynamics to remediate environmentally damaged areas. When we got to college, we ended up reading more classical mythology, but it didn't have that same wide-eyed appeal (or we were squinting more). more ›

Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? more ›

Cocktail Cred

Cocktail Cred

What a workload, what a record! For close to ten years, 3,500 nights in a row, the barkeeps at Tini Bigs have been shaking, stirring & pouring. Not to mention researching, developing & testing, testing, testing. (Who can say as much? 13 Coins and Denny's, those always-open stalwarts, don't have the same reputation for innovative drinks, to say the least.) To celebrate, owner Keith Robbins dropped the price of libations to $3.50...for a couple of hours. more ›

Yellow Polka-Dot Martini

Yellow Polka-Dot Martini

The martinis already come in a bewildering array of colors & flavors at Tini Bigs, and they're adding even more. Owner Keith Robbins and GM Patrick Haight, authors of a comprehensive book of martini recipes, have come up with five newcomers: aloe vera & Bombay gin; pomegranate & ZipFizz powdered energy drink, green tea & ginger; roasted red peppers; and chocolate & chili pepper. more ›

Tunnel Party with Infernal Noise Brigade

Tunnel Party with Infernal Noise Brigade

Seattlest doesn't normally do the rave thing, and we would never even consider going to Burning Man, but we're kind of curious about the October 15th Internal Combustion event, described as "an underground trance dance gathering at a place like no other," only because where its taking place, that underground tunnel by Stevens Pass, is in fact a place like no other: site of the historic 1910 Stevens Pass avalanche that killed 96 people aboard two trains stalled in the snow. Having a rave/trance party in such a place seems kind of like screening The Shining at a birthday party for an orphan who's dad went insane and killed people with an ax. Or maybe its not totally comparable with that, but still... more ›

Otter Fever

We’ve already told you about the alarmingly cute sea otter infant bobbing around in the Seattle Aquarium. But the Enhydra Lutris shenanigans don’t stop there. Odds are, if you plunk your butt on a bike with any regularity in the greater Seattle area, you've heard of the Sea Otter Classic. Commencing this Thursday and running through Sunday the 17th, it is the Season Opener of biking, the Burning Man for the "Two wheels good, four wheels bad" set, the Chain-Ring Rite of Spring…sorry, we’ll stop now. more ›
