This week, keep holy the slow death of celluloid with any of these three fascinating relics of the silver screen.
This Week In Seattle Cinema: Take in a Classic
Seattle Edition of Whedonesque Burlesque: We'll Be In Our Bunk
Whedonesque Burlesque: Seattle Edition couldn't have come at a better time. The idea is so forehead-slappingly obvious, we're a little bit surprised it took this long to get here. We are now left with the hope that someone is dork enough to create an ElectraGirl v. Mrs. Malcolm Reynolds routine. Or Gunn v. Jayne, if guys are your thing.
Can't Miss It: The Weekend
It's Memorial Day weekend, which means you get an extra (probably rainy) day to enjoy yourself and commemorate things. What are you going to do with the day? Check out the weekend schedule to lock in your plans.
Burlesque Arrives on Vashon: Burlesco Notturno
Hosted by Seattle (and Vashon) favorite Kevin Kent and Mme X, Burlesco Notturno aims to preserve the burlesque spirit but also to expand it, not only with musical performances but also with aerial arts performance as well.
Can't Miss It: Thursday
PLAY TIME: Woman Seeking... theatre company presents this satirical 1922 play by Pulitzer Prize winner George Kelly at Capitol Hill's Richard Hugo House. A play about a play, a group of loopy ladies has decided to stage a production, but they are met with challenges at every turn. Though nearly 90 years old, The Torch-Bearers easily entertains with fast-paced comedy and lots of physical gags.
Halloween Shows You Don't Want to Miss
The shows we're talking about may not be ghoulish or involve (much) candy, but you'll be talking about it Monday morning at work anyway. Columbia City Theater is putting on a hell of a Halloween weekend of shows that you'd be a fool to miss out on.
Dress Code: The Good, Bad and Ugly
Welcome to the Dress Code, where we celebrate, critique, commend and (on occasion) condemn fashion trends, shows, designers, boutiques, events and everything in between. From the couturiers and costumers to the retail clothiers and quirky DIY crafters, fashion--good and bad--is everywhere. The Dress Code is where we wear our hearts on our sleeves and write about it all.
l'Edition Francaise Smolders at The Triple Door
The assignment: a “l’edition francaise” burlesque show, with three choreographers combining to present their take on sexuality, with a french twist. Presented by burlesque madame Lily Verlaine, herself one of the choreographers, l’Edition Francaise ran for two shows last Wednesday (Bastille Day) on the Triple Door’s main stage.
Bastille Day at the Triple Door: L’Edition Francaise
Exactly two hundred and twenty one years ago today, hundreds of Parisians, brewing with freedom-loving fervor and revolution, stormed the Bastille prison and military fortress—France’s symbol of monarchical tyranny and oppression. The fall of the Bastille marks the advent of the French Revolution, secularism, citizenship, inalienable rights, and the “modern era”. Nowadays the French celebrate their freedom with fireworks, feasting, parades and parties, and the party continues 5,000 miles away.

TAKING OFF: Tonight is opening night of Shine: A Burlesque Musical. We wondered what a burlesque musical might look and sound like, and after watching this, we got our answer. It looks like a freaking sexy musical, that’s what. Shine is a full-book musical that tells the story of the infamous Aristocrat Theatre and a family of misfits that try to save it from demolition and gentrification. Winner of the Vancouver Ovation Award for “Best New Work,” Shine is also heading to New York’s Fringe in August, but not until its through entertaining Seattle burlesque and/or musical fans through July 18. Tassels and electric guitars, need we say more? 18+, of course.
It's Not PETA, But It's Close
Surprisingly, the above ad (NSFW, unless your work is burlesque- and/or violence-friendly) isn't part of PETA's "sea kittens" campaign, but it might as well be. Objectification of women? Check. Making fish "sexy"? Check. Somehow drawing a parallel between killing a person with harming a fish? Check. The PSA is from Dutch animal rights group Wakker Dier ("awake animal"), but we fully except PETA to recruit some local burlesque performers the next time they need to protest Pike Place Market fish-throwing.

BURLESQUE ON THE BIG SCREEN: Northwest Film Forum will be showing A Wink and a Smile only until the 21st, so if you're interested in learning more about the lives of some of Seattle's finest burlesque dancers, we encourage you to get out and see it before it's too late! The documentary follows ten ordinary women attending Miss Indigo Blue's six-week program at the Seattle Academy of Burlesque, where they are transformed from their daily lives into beautiful bombshells who are not afraid to show off their skills and new-found empowerment.
Can't Miss It: Wednesday
GLUTEN FREEDOM: Dr. Stephen Wangen, founder of the IBS Treatment Center, has a new book out called Healthier Without Wheat: A New Understanding of Wheat Allergies, Celiac Disease, and Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance. As you can tell from the title, his contention is that you don't have to have celiac disease to be gluten intolerant. Personally, we are disturbed by intolerance of any kind, so we are glad to hear that he's working on a cure--what? Just don't eat wheat?
Take a Walk on Seattle's Sexy Side
It’s a rare occasion when you can order a drink and get a giant martini glass adorned with the Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese.

Big Fish Meets Moulin Rouge: Couture Carnivale
MargiDavid Salon, in conjunction with Sound Magazine, will host Couture Carnivale, their second annual fashion show, at the Last Supper Club this Sunday, March 29th from 6-11 p.m. The show benefits FareStart, a job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals. Sunday's event combines a fashion show featuring four local boutiques, burlesque performances by Miss Sugar Magnolia, Iva Handfull and Fannie Beaverhausen, and music by DJ Sang-Do. We caught up with Carrie from MargiDavid Salon to discuss the hotness.
Can't Miss It: Wednesday
THE NATIVE MASK: Of Myth & Mask, at the Steinbrueck Native Art Gallery, explores Northwest Coast mythology and the regalia used in its storytelling. The exhibit features masks by David Boxley, Corey Bulpitt, Al Charles, George David, Erich Glendale, Eugene Isaacs, Norman Jackson, James Madison, and John Wilson. We were just reading Jonathan Raban's Passage to Juneau, in which he talks about how bowdlerized Pacific Northwest myth was in its retelling by Europeans. So throw away the books and try this "art" thing out.
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
THE SECRETS OF CHANGE: According to this website, Rikki Ducornet is "a being unchained, transcendent as a mythical angel." That's probably placing the po-mo writer and poet on bit of a pedestal, but it's true--at least in the sense that Ducornet is more than a little "out there." She reads from her book of short, surrealist stories, The One Marvelous Thing, at the Elliott Bay Book Co. tonight.
Weekend Music
Head to the Sunset tonight for Sub Pop band Oxford Collapse. Along with Love as Laughter, it's a veritable indie pop fest!
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
ART FORUM: Art critic Rachel Kushner has written a novel, Telex From Cuba. It starts out like a painting, which only makes sense, considering. You can read the first chapter, or just head to Elliott Bay tonight and let her read it to you.

Burlesque? Stripping? Let's Just Say "Naked Chicks"
Suicide Girls is five years old, which makes these young starlets some of the grande dames of alt-porn. You can celebrate with them tonight, when they bring their controversial burlesque show to Neumo's.
