Ballard Firm Fined $12,000 by State Department of Ecology

Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel Co. has been fined $12,000 by the Washington State Department of Ecology for spilling sand and gravel into the Lake Washington ship canal. The company, which has been operating in Ballard since 1907, spilled sand and gravel mixtures, which can damage the marine habitat and clog the gills of fish from shoreside bunkers. They have also been cited by the Department of Ecology for lacking a spill-response plan and for not having any records of required stormwater inspections.

Capitol Hill Seattle was on fire today, with a Google-mapped report on the dog cops chased around Cal Anderson for an unreasonably long time and a poll on who should be the face on Capitol Hill's dollar bill. (Maybe we suggest Editor MvB's visage?) The Southlake enthused about The Bachelor's visit to Seattle, including five points of interest and--yes--a Google map of the episode's highlights. Cascade Bicycle and MyBallard want to talk about the Burke-Gilman's missing link. Matthew, Laurie and Iris over at Roots And Grubs were let down by their Trader Joes tortillas, but shared how they saved dinner. It sounds scrumptious!

These days Seattlest's skateboarding activity is limited almost exclusively to a few lazy longboard turns on the Burke-Gilman every once in a while, and the Wall of Death bank under the University Bridge (the skate spot that is literally dwarfed by the gigantic monument to it across the path) was one of our little pleasures on those rides. Just a quick up and down and we were on our way. Back in the day, though, we could have spent countless hours skating that spot, so when we saw a post about the recent safe-ification/ruination of that bank over on the Slog it hit us pretty hard:

Barter, trade; the original commerce. You give us this and we give you that which inside we hope is of lesser value somehow, because that's the way we've been trained since we were kids. Our steelie for your catseye, Grandpa. Or how about our Short Fuse for your Storm Shadow? Our royal sampler of never-will-bes and never-weres for your Canseco rookie? No tradebacks, bitch, even though as soon as the deal is done one of us is going to start bragging. You know you don't want Neighborhood Justice to enforce this contract.

To get home from work Seattlest would walk up the hill to the bus tunnel downtown, get on a 72X or 73X that takes about 5-7 minutes via the I-5 express lanes to get to the University District and then hoof it along the Burke Gilman to Wallingford. If things went well it could take about fifteen minutes and involved some nice walking - Not too bad, and not much slower than if we drove. Of course that had to end, though. We gave up on the University expresses when the bus tunnel closed and can now be found on the 26 which takes approximately fifteen hours to get from downtown to Wallingford.

It looks like the Summer Nights concert series is going to move to Gasworks Park this year after last season's flop on the other side of the lake and we say it's not a moment too soon. Gasworks is a fantastic park that has been underutilized for as long as we've been in the neighborhood. It's such a great space and it's so wasted on the handfull of kite flyers, slack liners, skateboarders and resting Burke Gilman runners that you find there on any given day.

Let’s face it. You are not Lance Armstrong. You're probably OK with that fact, and Seattlest is proud of you nonetheless. But, maybe you still got a little inspired during the Tour de France and ran out and bought yourself a road bike. A few spins out and back on the Burke Gilman trail and you’re ready for something more interesting? Try the Tour de Peaks this weekend.
