Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Jan. 30-Feb. 1

STRONG, WILY OL'D MAN: My! Oldominion, a legendary and superdope Northwest hiphop collective boasting members who happen to be some of our area's strongest and most creative artists, certainly has aged well. The group turns ten years old this year, and to celebrate, they're throwing a family reunion/party/show combo at Neumos this weekend. On the bill: The Saturday Knights, Grayskul, and assorted extremely important members of the crew. We're just saying, Oldominion knows how to party. more ›

Where Seattlest Interviews Barton Carroll

Where Seattlest Interviews Barton Carroll

If you've yet to hear Barton Carroll's work, you should get on it. There's a Billy Braggish quality to it, a little Bruce Springsteen. There's a little Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark going on there, maybe even a little bit of the Pogues. His guitar work isn't necessarily extraordinary, but it builds cascading walls of sound that wrap around you, creating a nice little room where the songs dance amid filtered light and images of longing. His stories aren't afraid to back off and let the instruments go for a spell. His voice cracks now and then the way skin cracks on a well-worked pair of hands. Honest is the best word for it. more ›

Get Out Tuesday: New PJ DVD Screening

Tomorrow, the biggest, bestest band to ever emerge from Seattle—there, we said it—releases a new concert DVD. You can buy (or Netflix) Immagine in Cornice (Italian for "Picture in a Frame") and watch it in the privacy of your own condo, or—lucky us—catch it big-screen-style at the Metro. more ›

The New Ann Wilson

If you would've told us back in the golden days of Heart, back in the "Barracuda" days, that Ann Wilson would one day record a version of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" featuring guest vocalists Shawn Colvin and Rufus Wainwright, Seattlest would've told you to shut the hell up. But now here we are in 2007, when Mandy Moore and Babyface have gone and recorded folk music records, or at least records that show off as folkie as Mandy Moore and Babyface can possibly be. more ›

Sasquatch Report: “Not Only Blind But Deaf”

Sasquatch Report: “Not Only Blind But Deaf”

First of all, we could describe it all, the minutiae, the ecstasy -- but streaming video is also fun. MSN Video was at Sasquatch, filming for future on-demand streaming starting Thursday, June 1. (We understand teasers and highlights are up now.) They have artist interviews and a blog from Sean Nelson (whom our friend thinks lives upstairs from him, after seeing him appear with the Decemberists -- "He's in a band?" he asked. "Man, he makes a racket stomping around up there. He's got a piano, too.") You can create your own playlist or just sit back and Sasquatch. more ›

No Tall Springsteen

When Starbucks announced they were getting into the CD selling business, we were quite pleased with the idea that the local chain could eventually de-throne 'no explicit content' Walmart as the nation's leading seller of music. We decided that we don't really care anymore after Starbucks decided not to sell Bruce Springsteen's latest 'Devils & Dust' since it contains lyrics describing a night with a hooker in the the song 'Reno.' While we are not encouraging (or even discouraging) spending a night with a Nevada prostitute, we do think the song is not especially offensive and that the CD is clearly labeled as having material inappropriate for minors. We think the company is well within its rights to refuse to sell material it finds offensive (perhaps why our human beat-box album never really got distribution there), we think it does further cement Starbucks' reputation as being not especially cool. more ›
