Seattlest arrived on scene soon after the Capitol Hill Block Party had opened. We wandered, checked out the stage locations and thought about getting a beer, then spotted a booth touting free bottled water. It looked like the booth had something to do with praying to the Earth Spirits or some other new wave white hippy crap, but we decided to take our chances. We asked for a water and oddly enough their were no questions asked of Seattlest, no "Is your spirit at peace with the world?" or "Do you ever cry for Mother Nature?" We did, however, get thoroughly eye-fucked by our water purveyor. We told him thank you, took a mental bath and off we went to hear some music. (And before you reactionaries out there start accusing us of homophobia, get over yourselves. We're not talking about getting "checked out." We're talking about a look that said, Right now, in my mind, I'm eating spaghetti off of your chest.)
Winners and Stinkers of the Block Party [Friday]
Take us to the Carnavas
Hopefully you didn't waste your money this weekend having lunch in hell, because tomorrow the long-awaited Carnavas from the Silversun Pickups will be released – just in time to pick it up and get acquainted before the Silversun Pickups do their thing at the Capitol Hill Block party this Saturday.
Seattlest Interview: Brian Aubert of Silversun Pickups
Silversun Pickups is an up-and-coming California four-piece with boy-girl rock vocals. Their 2005 EP, featuring the single "Kissing Families" won them a lot of new fans, including John Richards and the rest of the KEXP crew. Now their full-length is set to be released next Tuesday to much anticipation in the indie rock blogosphere, and rightfully so---it's solid. Seattlest spoke to raspy singer/guitarist Brian Aubert about the differences between the EP and the LP, the comparisions they get to other bands, and their favorite places (and beer) in Seattle. All the girls on the internets think he's dreamy, but as far as we're concerned, Brian's a total Chatty Kathy.
Paradoxically Good But Boring
Seattlest saw three accomplished bands perform at the Paradox last Friday. Even though we were a little out of it from the usual double-shifts at the multiple day jobs, we can still testify that all the usual stuff you've read about the Silversun Pickups, Crystal Skulls and Helio Sequence remains true as of this writing - except all that stuff you've heard about Brian Aubert sounding like Billy Corgan is not actually true; his voice was more original than that and, let's just say, better. The Crystal Skulls earned the Spoon/Smiths/Stereolab comparisions enjoyed previously and Helio Sequence sounded exactly like their label describes them: "...buoyed by swift pop undercurrents, with this collision of electric and organic elements." It was all very accomplished and good, but we weren't feeling it somehow.
