Tonight, everybody's favorite local chanteuse Jesse Sykes plays a free KEXP show at Seattle Center's Mural Ampitheater, featuring music from her new EP Gentleness of Nothing. (Tomorrow night, Rocky Votolato plays the Mural.)
Weekend Music
On How We Sweat Our Face Off at Pride
Well, folks, Pride weekend has officially come and gone, and every last ounce of rainbow has been squeezed out of our veins. It was a hot weekend to be outside on hard, hot pavement drinking beer and scoping the scene, but we perservered so that we could have a tale to tell you people.
Meanwhile, At Marymoor This Summer...
Remember how we said that ZooTunes was going to be kicking this summer? Well, Marymoor is kicking harder, at least initially. It's kicking off with a big double sucker-punch to the Zoo: Erykah Badu and The Roots. On the same night: June 5. And then it'll kind of fizz out.
Seattlest Interview: Mark Pickerel: Screaming Trees Drummer, Praying Hands Leader, Etc.
Musicians who remain active in the recording industry for over 20 years usually become internationally famous and aim to save the world, or quietly cultivate a devout fan base by emancipating humanity one pair of ears at a time. Mark Pickerel—drummer, vocalist, and Ellensburg native—has followed the latter career path.
Get Out Tonight, If You Already Have Tickets: Brandi Carlile at the Paramount
Tonight would be the night to dominate the jukebox at the Wildrose, because all the ladies (except for us) will be at the Paramount drinking a nice tall glass of alt.country goodness. Brandi Carlile's back in town with her hot twin-powered band and we understand she tends to pull traffic away from the corner of 11th and Pike (at least until 11 PM). We don't really get it, but whatever.
Stalk of the Town: Oct. 26-28, 2007
It's Seattle Shakespeare Company's version of the wandering prince Pericles on Friday night for MvB, followed Saturday night by Britain's accordion-driven, Brechtian street opera trio with neo-castrati Martyn Jacques, the Tiger Lilies at the Moore, ladies and gentlemen.
Meanwhile, Another Sold-Out ZooTunes Concert
But because we dig her so much, and we dig her backup twins and the people around her that we've dealt with in our other life as a sort-of journalist, we couldn't help but mention she's back today for yet another local show. If you don't have tickets, don't worry. There's always Craigslist. But if it's not worth $200 to you (wtf?), she'll probably be back sometime in the future.
Carlile Rocks It with a Light Saber
We said we would make it to see Brandi Carlile at the Moore last Friday, if for no reason other than to continue our quest to figure out what it is about her that everyone loves so much. But alas, we wound up celebrating someone's 10th reunion at Princeton instead. So we were sitting on an ivy-strewn lawn in central Jersey on Friday when Carlile reportedly kicked a lot of ass at the Moore.
Loud Music + Wild Animals = Good Times... Right?
WAMU Zoo Tunes recently announced their upcoming concert lineup. Personally, we say Meh -- but we're not every day listeners of The Mountain, so to be honest, we don't even recognize half the names on this list. Herbie Hancock would probably be great. The guy's a jazz legend after all.
We Don't Get It
We don't get it. There's been so much hype over this Brandi Carlile character for so long, and we finally "broke down" and went to see her last night at the Triple Door. We're not sure what all the buzz is about.
Go See Brett Dennen on Sunday
Maybe it's because we're from the East Coast, but we're firm believers that there's some sort of force field around the West Coast, keeping all the singer/songwriters from becoming world famous and conquering the planet in the same way that eastern folksingers like Dar Williams and the Indigo Girls have.
Carlile in Concert
A couple weeks ago, Seattlest had our first listen of Brandi Carlile’s self-titled debut album, and to be honest, we weren’t sure how we felt. We liked it, but we can’t say that it excited us. It kind of felt like something was missing.
