Where Rodrigo y Gabriela Blow Our Mind

Where Rodrigo y Gabriela Blow Our Mind

Seattlest has been making some semblance of a living writing about music for a few years now. During that time, we've tried to put into words performances by some truly great artists (Chris Thile comes to mind), and it never gets easier to verbalize music. Talking about music really like dancing about architecture, although we have felt the inexplicable desire to dance inside extraordinary buildings before. more ›

The Sword is Mightier Than the Pen

Channeling Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Slayer, The Sword traffic in heavy rock riffs and mystical imagery. They'll unleash an audio onslaught on Neumo's tonight. more ›

Neumo's Had a Million Butts, And They Rocked Them All

Neumo's Had a Million Butts, And They Rocked Them All

OK, perhaps there weren't a million people at Neumo's on Saturday night, but the turnout for the Buttrock Suites was downright impressive. Replete with live band, the Suites was a smörgåsbord of guilty-pleasure rock, sexy swagger, and manic modern dance madness that threw the first punch and kept swinging all night long. The energy was a bit low when we arrived towards the end of the readings, but it did not stay down once the band took the stage. There were mullet wigs and torn jeans and bandannas and pleather pants, and did we know that Rhett Miller had nice pipes? Yes, he does. However, the prolific singer was in fact Rick Miller, and apparently the mistake we just made happens far to often to good old Rick (thanks for dropping us a line, Rick, and for John Galt's comment). The important point is: Rick Miller had buttrock-worthy pipes that could easily handle a range from Steve Perry to Klaus Meine, and he had Seattlest wrapped around his pinky (current Rick info, including his bluegrass predilections, is on the Buttrock Suites MySpace page). more ›

Wolves Have Daddies Too

Wolves Have Daddies Too

There was *a lot* going on last weekend, what with the game itself and all other Superbowl-related activities. This weekend, not so much. So if you don't have anything planned for tonight (besides four episodes of Arrested Development), you could always drop by Chop Suey for a free show featuring The Divorce and Wolfmother. Expect a lotta hipsters, as both DJ Franki Chan and The Cobra Snake will be on hand. OMG, I can't wait for all the postmortem pics of terrible 80's fashion, coupled with Sparks tongue and girls trying real hard to look fierce. more ›

This Week in Hip-Hop, Rock, and Country

Guru of Gang Starr fame is dropping by Chop Suey this evening. If there was any justice in this world Guru would be selling out the Key Arena (admittedly awkward if the Sonics happened to be playing there at the same time). Gang Starr had some of the most thoughtful lyrics around and they really did a lot to redefine the limits to hip-hop. Since he's not selling out Key Arena, we can at least enjoy him within the intimate confines of Chop Suey. more ›
