Gallery: High Dive's Birthday Was One Heck of Party

When we showed up at the High Dive last week to celebrate their birthday (and watch a killer show), it was like going home. The whole place was full of friends, musicians and music lovers alike. It's the reason why we love being a part of the music scene--you never have to watch a show alone, even if you arrived by yourself. more ›

Wild Orchid Children and Other Suggestions for Live Music Tonight!

Wild Orchid Children and Other Suggestions for Live Music Tonight!

The Columbia City Theater (CCT) is quickly becoming a favorite venue for up and coming bands and musicians. It has more than a little to do with knowledgeable employees and owners who seem to know the local indie scene inside and out. Tonight's show is a little bit of a mixed bag, which is a great draw for almost any music fan. Wild Orchid Children is a little bit Beastie Boys, a little bit alt-rock, and a lot of crazy. From what little we've had the opportunity to hear and see, the show should be interesting at least. We're holding back judgments on this one, it's kind of a toss up whether their live show will be good or not. Though, as I mentioned before, CCT tends not to disappoint. They've got some decent bands opening the evening for them with See Me River and Magic Mirrors. This is where the mixed bag comes in, because these two seem to be a bit more at home as Seattle indie rock, the latter a bit more on the harder rock side than the former.

We Wrote the Book on Connectors and Hobosexual are helping to throw a big ol' birthday bash at the Blue Moon Tavern. Matt Brown, one of the most devoted Seattle music fans you'll ever meet or see or hear for that matter, is getting a birthday party anyone would envy with WE, Hobosexual, Police Teeth, and The TG Project all rocking up a storm tonight in his honor. Show starts at 9pm and there's a Meat Raffle. Seriously! Prizes provided by Casper's BBQ, Smokin' Pete's, Uli's Famous Sausage, and Lunchbox Laboratory. What more could you want? Oh yea, the cover is only 5 bucks. You just can't go wrong.

It's just about time for a music-themed blog round-up, so here we go. Here's what we listened to while we compiled this: Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You," Patty Griffin's "Rain," Edwyn Collins' "You'll Never Know," and The Thermals' "Returning To The Fold." more ›

Happy Birthday, Dear "Awesome"

Right on the heels of Linda's 15th birthday earlier this week is "Awesome"'s 5th birthday celebration, tonight at the Tractor. Yes, it was but five years ago this month that the talented comedy-art-pop septet played their first show at the Rendezvous' Jewelbox Theatre. That was 2004, a time of great strife and war; now it's 2009, and there's still great strife and war, but also hoverboards and robots and aliens to truth-melt your face off. It's called progress, people. So tonight is the night and the Tractor is the place to catch one of our most favorite local bands, along with openers We are Golden and Central Services. It's only $10 for the 9:30 p.m. 21+ show. more ›

WHO IS INVERSE'S INVERSE? California hiphop duo Inverse are named thus because, to a potentially undiscerning eye, the two rappers' backgrounds don't have very much in common with each other. Sometimes opposites make the best hiphop, though, each side bringing its own wealth of experience and musical influences. According to their Myspace, Inverse raps about "happiness, pain and everything in between." With locals Cancer Rising, Akrish, Notion, and Know Choice opening up for them, this is going to be an easy-going, sunny hiphop show that will do right by you this weekend. more ›

PILLOW TALK: Almost no one we know gets a terrific night's sleep these days. Either it's restlessness or insomnia or neighbors, but it's tricky to get sleep to shroud you in his purple cloak. Dr. Catherine Darley, a naturopathic doctor from The Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine has put together a Sleep 101 seminar (seminars do put us to sleep!) on what normal sleep is, and what can go wrong: sleep disordered breathing (and its effects on the cardiovascular system), insomnia, et al. And she'll talk about how sleep deprivation affects you, and how a sleep disorder can increase obesity. more ›

Would-be Birthday Wishes for Kurt Cobain

Would-be Birthday Wishes for Kurt Cobain

We think of Kurt Cobain’s short, violently-ended life like Clarence Worley does The King’s: "In Jailhouse Rock he was everything rockabilly's about. I mean, he is rockabilly. Mean, surly, nasty, rude. In that movie he couldn't give a fuck about nothing except rockin' and rollin', living fast, dying young and leaving a good-looking corpse." more ›
