Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on.

BOOKS: Dave "Mr. McSweeney's" Eggers' latest is titled What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng. Mr. Deng himself--a survivor of the Darfur shitstorm--discusses his life tonight. Bring tissue.

There is no doubt that the reports of a family that intentionally stunted the growth of their disabled daughter so she would be easier to care for are bizarre and surprising. But what Seattlest finds even more bizarre and surprising is that the P-I, known of late for finding one small, boozy detail of a story and then blowing it up to inappropriately Herculean proportions, chose to entirely omit the detail that the condition the 9 year-old girl suffers from--static encephalopathy--is very often the result of excessive fetal exposure to alcohol.

Holy crap are we proud of Microsoft today! No, we know you're braced for this to take a dramatic turn towards the ironic at any moment, but straight-up, this is good stuff. The BBC is reporting that Microsoft has threatened to stop doing business in China if the regime there doesn't back off on the human rights violations. The particular offense that has Redmond reconsidering the Chinese market? China's crackdown on bloggers!

Celebrate Ben Franklin's 300th birthday with the Bikini Bandits and Phillyist! (NSFW). Speaking of Mr. Franklin, send in a picture of Ben (or Ed Rendell) with a red tongue and win a free t-shirt. And they might have the next YearlyKos in Philly.

As a wise man once said: "Ohhhh, we're half-way there / Ohhh-oh, living on a prayer." On Wednesday, SIFF officially reached the half-way mark. But it's by no means all downhill from here. There's still tons more great films to see before the fest is through.

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow.

Seattlest sat down with a BBC reporter a few weeks ago and said a bunch of incredibly profound (but apparently also unintelligable) things into his minidisk player on the subject of Seattle's threatened two-newspaper town status. That BBC reporter was Matt Wells and he filed his story over the weekend, but it's only got a little taste of Seattlest at the very end where we talk about how in the future you'll pilot your hovercar over to Seattlest branded media-kiosk-bots to get your news. Brilliant.

Some of the most patient people in Seattle are finally seeing some success with their tireless efforts. The Sun Tzu Soundsystem has been trying for years to find success flying the broken-beat/future soul flag, and this weekend the Sun Tzu crew will be celebrating the fruits of those efforts by hosting a show that has the potential to surpass the highly-acclaimed Jamie Lidell performance from a few weeks back.

Seattle summers are a time for frolicking and play, while the gray winters here are well-suited for quiet reflection. The transition is an all too quick one, since the Seattle autumn lasts all of a month, more of a switch than a season. This weekend is a good time to bid farewell to blue skies and welcome the fall by helping out the less fortunate before beginning your winter hermitage.

German archaeologists at the famous Hohle Fels site have unearthed a 28,000 year old stone dildo:

For some time now, weblogger and documentarian Chuck Olsen has been working on his film Blogumentary. Now, combining a subject and a city near and dear to Seattlest, Blogumentary will be premiering this Friday at the UW's Evans School of Public Affairs.

Continuing Seattlest's new feature, Downer Friday: Sites around the world have been commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, a place Seattlest has personally visited and personally been marked forever by.
