Two weeks after a gunman at Folklife injured three people, Mayor Greg Nickels announced his plan to ban guns from all city-owned property. Yesterday, Wash. State Attorney General Rob McKenna (defending his office against challenger John Ladenburg in November's election) released an official legal opinion concluding that Nickels does not have the authority to order the prohibition.

Nothing fishy about this breaking news. Yesterday, the Pacific Fishery Management Council voted to ban Chinook salmon fishing off the California coast and most of Oregon for this year. The regulations ban commercial salmon fishing outright for the season, but do allow for limited sport fishing of Coho salmon. The regulations approved are the most severe in the history of Pacific Coast salmon fishing.

This morning, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced a proposed ban on foam food containers and a fee for disposable bags at grocery stores. The ban on polystyrene foam products would outlaw common items like plates, meat trays, eggshell containers, and cups from both restaurants and grocery stores. The so-called "green fee" would apply to both paper and plastic bags at your local grocery store. The fee would impose a 20-cent charge for each disposable bag.
