It’s early on a Sunday morning and for once, parking is easy to find in Pioneer Square. We click across the historic red-bricked plaza to the flagship store of Caffe Umbria. We’re met by a long, polished steel bar with clean lines. It’s classic Italian design, second only to the other, more rustic half of the store with exposed brick, wooden beams and beautifully painted tile work. The friendly baristas smile alluringly and then surprise us by asking for our drink orders in plain old English. We really thought it was going to be Italian.
You have probably heard by now that three lanes of northbound I-5 will be shut down at Spokane Street for three weeks, starting tonight.
KOMO and KUOW report that a cop car and a bicycle were involved in an accident this morning on 1st Avenue South near Brandon St. The cop and the bicyclist ended up at Harborview, the cop car ended up inside a sub shop. No word on the state of the bicycle, but we've a feeling a trip to Gregg's is in its future.
>>>Third Place Books, 7:00pm. Another weighty tome, Unreleased Beatles by Richie Unterberger, to add to your Beatles-only reference section. It details the shitload of stuff that was recorded but, you know, forgotten about what with being so high at the time, plus the whole headtrip with Yoko. Free with OCD collecting disorder.
New on the Seattle Weekly's website--a page for the Weekly's "Street Team."
We’re crazy about ramen. It might go back to Tampopo, the 1985 “Noodle Western” centered around a ramen shop, with its memorable raw egg and saliva swapping scene. While that movie glamorized the noodles for us, we’d never been to a real ramen shop, instead settling for the 8-for-a-buck version and always wondering just what’s inside those seasoning packets.
This almost got past us, but really there is no way to escape the steel jaws of Seattlest's newsreader. The Seattle Times mentioned earlier this week that north-south travel times through downtown have actually improved since the bus tunnel was closed.
Lo and behold, we love lotus!
Dear pansy-ass liberals at KUOW--stop the relativism. Just as there's a difference between Gitmo and My Lai, there's a difference between East and West Marginal Way.
Ding dong the car tax's dead. The wicked car tax is dead. Well, not officially dead like you'll get out of paying it if your car tabs come up this month, but the Monorail Project has started the process of ending the tax on June 30th, due to the fact that all those sexy properties the Project swept up to make way for the Green Line have been selling like hotcakes. Uh, hotcakes that you force private residents to sell you for a mass transit line you don't intend to build and then sell back to the public for more than what you paid for them. That kind of hotcakes.
A man described as distraught apparently attempted suicide last night by jumping from the First Avenue South bridge in West Seattle. His wife and child in a nearby car witnessed the unsuccessful attempt. The First Avenue South bridge is not very high, although there are a number of much higher jumps in the area. The 20-yr-old male was sufficiently mobile after his first jump to climb back on the bridge and try again.
It just seems downright surreal. Jane Fonda, star of Barbarella, Klute, and Coming Home will be at Costco (4401 4th Avenue South) on Wed., April 27, from 1 – 2pm signing her new memoir My Life So Far.
This year the first day of the NCAA tournament occurs on St. Patrick's Day, so if there was ever a time to watch the games in a bar, this is it. Unfortunately, neither the Notre Dame Fighting Irish nor the Tulane Green Wave made the tourney. But our hometown Huskies did. In fact, they are one of the favorites. Their first-round game is today at noon. The tournament's first games begin at 9 am, and several local bars are opening early to accomodate basketball and liquor fans:

Tuesdays are Muppet Days
