Get Out: Macage Harybu Trio @ Seattle Drum School

Seattlest doesn't know crap about jazz. (Until we recently drank a Brother Thelonious, we thought Monk was actually a dude in an orange robe.) But staple a big-time Seattle rock drummer (above, going off solo) to a jazz act and we're interested enough to listen and learn. more ›

MUSIC: The L.A.B. at Seattle Drum School hosts a birthday party for the wife of one of the dudes in Chicken Starship. It's all-ages, so there's no booze, but there will be birthday cake. Considering John Moe's in the band and the entrance fee go towards funding the school, we'll give the lack of alcohol a pass. more ›

MUSIC: Did you know that Frank Sinatra called George Harrison's Something "the most beautiful love song ever written"? Well he did. A bunch of local musicians [myspace] are getting together to play Harrison's songs, and if they don't have a stuffed elk head for "I've Got My Mind Set On You," they do have Alan White, who played drums on Harrison's most successful album, All Things Must Pass. The show was meant to take place on the 5-year anniversary of Harrison's death last month, but we had all that snow, so it's happening now. The whole thing is a benefit for Northwest Harvest. more ›

Oh Deer! (What the Buck?)

Oh Deer! (What the Buck?)

While taking a leisurely stroll through Bellevue’s business district earlier this week, our heads cocked a little to the side when we spotted this strapping young black deer all painted up like the solar system. It seemed like a strange thing to put on the sidewalk outside an abandoned office on 108th Ave NE, but then again, this is Bellevue - a town that has hardly an inkling of the artistic stact of its sister city across the lake (ahem-EMP-cough). more ›

Systematic Landscapes at the Henry

Systematic Landscapes at the Henry

It seems that everyone in town is buzzing about Maya Lin's new exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. Personally, we only really know Lin through her premiere memorial in DC, and, really, there is no denying the power and simplicity of that work. There is, however, great scope to her work. The Vietnam Memorial launched her career, but she is also responsible for another simple, powerful monument--the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. Creating works which inspire reflection and hope without trivializing the events they commemorate is a difficult line to walk. With the amount of criticism she endured from her first project, her own resilience has also become a subtext of her work. In fact, the 1995 Academy Award winner for best documentary, A Strong Clear Vision, revealed that resilience and exposed the sensitive soul that accompanies it. more ›
