- Starting Monday, Susan Enfield will take on her role as Seattle Public Schools' new chief academic officer. Now if only we knew her stance on high school math.
- This Saturday, you won't find a cheeseburger on the grill at Hillside Quickie's. But you will find tofu at their 4th Annual Vegan BBQ Buffet. We will add this to the "Only in Seattle" column.

OPENING: A new art gallery in Pioneer Square! What a thought. Flatcolor Gallery celebrates its grand opening as part of First Thursday art walk tonight, with work by 2H and Parskid. The gallery is the brain-child of Christopher Cook, who founded Flatcolor.com a few years back as a clearinghouse for limited-run works by local artists on the web. 5-9 p.m. // 528 First Ave. S. // free!
- The Rainier Valley Post reports that the third (ever!) director of the Union Gospel Mission will retire at the end of the year. That's truly the end of an era.
- Capitol Hill Seattle reports on the Capitol Hill (natch) art walk, newly upgraded to something called Blitz, after a redesign led by Ellen Forney--there's a map and a Facebook page.
- If you're on Phinney Ridge on Friday night, you can see their art walk and "party in the streets."
DANCE DANCE DANCE: Pint-size Swedish ex-ballerina Lykke Li returns to Seattle for her largest venue yet, the Showbox at the Market. Last time we saw her, we said she has "an extra helping of cute and an idiosyncratic voice: breathy baby-girl ("Liddle bit in love wi' you," she sings, and your heart melts) mixed with Swedish soul. Her first full album is Youth Novels. Live, she's in perpetual motion, sashaying around the stage, swiveling her hips, one hand pushing the audience back, the other punishing a cymbal with a drumstick." We're not saying it's because her parents were hippies, but she's got a hell of an onstage work ethic.
When the creativity faucet is on full blast, it can get tricky to turn it off--so these 25 local artists aren't even going to try. Instead, they have signed up to participate in a 24-hour art marathon in a beautiful old building in Georgetown, presented to the general public by CoCA for the 16th year in a row. By the time you read this, the marathon will have commenced; there are still twenty-some hours to pay your $25 (or $50 with wine and dinner) and get in on the silent and live auctions. This weekend's also the monthly Georgetown Art Attack--seems like it has potential to be quirky and interesting, right? Everybody loves arting in Georgetown!
Queen Anne is officially all grown up and Thursday nights have become our big cotillion. That's right, Ballard and Fremont and every-other-established-neighborhood-in-Seattle, we now have a farmers market and our very own art walk too! Suckas!
Are you there Seattle art world? It's us, Seattlest. We're trying our best to talk up your First Thursday openings, but it looks like you've crapped out on us this month. We understand: you're on vacation or something, it's kinda hot out, the BLUE ANGELS are in the sky ... We've got posts to post, however, and damned if we won't find something to recommend from your namby-pamby Art Walk offerings.
ART: Fremont celebrates First Friday with their monthly art walk, while the McLeod Residence hosts the opening of their new photography/painting exhibit on Seattle "celebrities."

Transplanted from the other coast, Maki Morinoue and husband Geoffrey Grauer's mission is to reinivigorate people's attitude toward art. This showing, along with an upcoming dance performance in July by Esse Aficionado are sure to do just that.
It's not easy to get to the South Park neighborhood of Seattle. At least it wasn't for us. We had directions to a marina where we would get a guided tour and we still had problems. With a guide! Last Saturday we drove around Harbor Island a little, saw some sights, met lots of friendly Chinese and finally arrived at the Harbor Marina just in time for a Duwamish river tour and the opening weekend of the Living Barge project.
Comic book fans from around the world woke up today to breaking news of an imminent re-match between award-winning Canadian cartoonist Seth (aka Gregory Gallant) and local comic book publisher and Comics Journal executive editor Gary Groth. Their previous battle from the late '90s left many spectators wondering if another round of their incendiary exchanges would incite Groth's well-documented flair for explosives and firearms, provoking Mr. '30s Fetish to respond in kind.
Tonight, Capitol Hill officially joins the club, with their first (ever?) Capitol Hill Art Walk at 7-9pm. The CHAW, as people who enjoy smokeless tobacco like to say, will be a monthly First Thursday event, just like the ones in Pioneer Square and Downtown.
Well, it's the first Thursday of the month and that can only mean one thing: free wine. Oh, and some art, we do so love the art. Yes, tonight is this month's Art Walk, where one can walk around and look at art...it's self-evident really. There's a whole slew of openings at the galleries this month, though time and time again, Seattlest finds ourselves just hanging out at the Forgotten Works building and allowing the crowds to come to us. (Memo to Forgotten Works: You've got the worst website ever, especially given that you're an ARTS organization.)
