A perfect sunny afternoon walk around Capitol Hill earlier this week was ruined by the most disturbing thing we've ever spotted on a Seattle sidewalk: a perfectly skinned squirrel, hairless save the still-furry tail. We spotted the poor creature on 12th Avenue, just south of Union. This was not the work of a clever coyote, which do stalk small animals on the Hill. Nope, all of the meat remained on the carcass, so it must have been some sick two-legged creature roaming about Capitol Hill. Made us glad that our animals are indoor only, but left us wondering if any of you have spotted skinned animals around Capitol Hill and what we can do about it.

We may have found the best headline of the week on Monday morning, but KIRO 7's website came through with doubtlessly the most disturbing headline of the week today. It read: "No Federal Violations For Boiled Monkey Death." Just re-typing the headline makes Seattlest shudder.

Remember how we wrote yesterday that six sea lions were found shot in traps in the Columbia River? Turns out they weren't shot. According to a NOAA press conference held this morning regarding the sea lion deaths, necropsies of the animals showed no evidence of recent gunshot wounds. X-rays did show metal fragments in the soft tissue of two of the sea lions, and another had a metal slug in its blubber. Another one of the sea lion victims had several shallow puncture wounds, consistent with a sea lion bite. Now that shooting as a cause of death has been ruled out, investigators say the possibilities are wide open.

This weekend, the carcasses of six sea lions were found shot to death in traps on the Columbia River. Now investigators from local law enforcement and Oregon and Washington's Departments of Fisheries are looking for the sea lions' executioner.

In early April, alarmed Seattleites began spotting pigeons walking and flying around downtown with blow darts impaling their heads and necks. Quickly dubbed "zombie pigeons," the creepy story was closely followed by another Seattle blog. Today animal rights group PETA announced they are offering a $2,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the pigeon sniper.

Some people like going to the Eatonville Pioneer Farm Museum to see the genuine 1880s cabin. For others, it's the chance to participate in the craft instructions or walk the nature trail.

In Seattle when your neighbor's dog won't shut up you glare out the window at nobody in particular momentarily before sliding it shut (with authority, because there's no neighborly impropriety on god's green Earth that can't be solved with a slammed window) and that's the end of it. That's not how they roll in Auburn, though. In Auburn they shoot the thing.
