Oh Iceland. As we've previously noted, its chilly climes makes for a hot music scene. Though you may not be able to pronounce them correctly, you know the names: Björk, Sigur Rós, Benni Hemm Hemm, Amiina. There are various accent marks and umlauts up the yin-yang, but in terms of music, Icelandic spells quality.

We say this with absolute certainty: we will never willingly go see Animal Collective live ever again. The past two times we've seen them have been trying at best. Last year, we convinced two friends to buy their own tickets to accompany us to one of their shows. Last Friday, we talked another friend into going with us to see AC. Both nights ended with us apologizing to our friends for what we made them endure. After Friday night's sold-out show at Neumo's, our crotchety companion provided his two-word review: "vapid and inane." Sigh, he's dead right.
Woo hoo! Friends of Seattlest Mean Recess are releasing a CD Saturday at Jules Mae, a release which Seattlest quite possibly personally caused to be delayed, by the way. Man Rockwell and Spanish for 100 are also playing and there's no YouTube for any of them, sadly. Also, Seattlest's own Kim Ruehl is at Cafe Bella downtown tonight at 9.
Last night at Neumo's, the 4th annual KEXP Yule Benefit was chockablock with music. We missed out on local band The Hands and showed up mid-set for Annuals, for whom we saw enough of their Arcade Fire-meets-Neutral Milk Hotel-meets Animal Collective sound to know that we need to see them in their entirety whenever they come to town again.
Last night, Seattlest was at a packed Neumo's to see Animal Collective. Having missed them on other tours (or, rather, not getting into their music until recently), we weren't quite sure what to expect. A colleague who had previously seen them play warned us that one of his worst concert-going ordeals involved AC as an opening band: "It might be terrible." Well, we wouldn't go so far as to say the show was terrible, but it wasn't exactly the most pleasant thing we've experienced either.
