There's still some tix left for Wednesday night's 7:30 p.m. SIFF benefit screening of Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis--all of whom have a shot at Academy Award nominations this year. This is your chance to see John Patrick Shanley's screen version of his Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play before it hits theaters later this month. It's about the Catholic church sex scandal, as viewed through the prisms of morality, truth, fear, faith, discipline, etc. We are as excited as one can be about such things. But seriously, the movie's got Oscar written all over it. Tickets are $12 with proceeds benefiting SIFF.

We had heard a lot of good buzz going into Sunshine Cleaning, starring the perpetually lovable and talented Amy Adams and the nearly as up-and-coming Emily Blunt as sisters who break into the lucrative niche growth industry of crime scene cleanup. Dealing with the literal blood, guts, and body fluids of the recently departed forces the ladies to examine some of the biohazards in their own lives. Wackiness and personal growth ensues. Unfortunately, the movie is good but not great, and the rest of the audience seemed to like it a lot more than we did. With a cute kid and Alan Arkin in tow as the sisters' crotchety dad, director Christine Jeffs is totally aiming for Little Miss Sunshine Cleaning, but with a wisp of a script and a couple overwrought scenes, this film ain't making it to the pageant.

Twenty-five days and 348 films later, the 31st Annual Seattle International Film Festival came to a close yesterday. This was a big SIFF---over 150 actors/filmmakers were brought to town for the fest (we do so love the Q&A), and organizers are reporting an approximate 5% increase in ticket sales from 2004's record year. Additionally, Sunday's live movie poster auction raised nearly $7000 for the SIFF Group.
