PONIES RUN THE MILE: Get ready for the horses to really run this Sunday, during the Emerald Downs' 74th Longacres Mile, which happens to be one of those "win and you’re in" races for the legendary Breeder’s Cup. So sure enough, you'll see some of the top horses and jockeys, including 2008 winner Jennifer Whitaker, riding Wasserman. Besides the horse racing, the official Railbird Rally tailgate begins at 10:30 a.m., which is another spectacle not to miss. Put on the fancy hats, heels, or seersucker and witness Washington Thoroughbred horse-racing history.

Neighborhood News and Local Blog Round-Up

  • Seattle's famed musician Dave Matthews is never too good for a ride around Green Lake. He's one with the locals, and we like that.
  • Powerball no more. That means, no bouncing balls spinning in a bubble, no cheesy ball reader wearing sequins, and no additional $12 million for the state of Washington.

The lead-footed driver of a Porsche Carrera woke up West Seattle's Alki neighborhood early this morning, after driving the car straight into the Puget Sound. Having overlooked the curve in the road, the driver and his fast-moving and pretty-penny-of-a-car went flying off the road, over the seawall, and submerged about 10 yards offshore. The male driver in his 50s managed to escape from the sinking car uninjured. Police officers were able to tow the car out of the water shortly after the crash.

  • Like most things we've attempted to borrow from the 70's, modern key parties just don't sound like nearly as much fun. According to the Belltowner, a "lock and key" singles party will be happening at See Sound next week.
  • Capitol Hill Seattle spots a "government money pit."
  • Unsurprisingly, Magnolia and Queen Anne residents aren't too pleased about the idea of a new jail being built smack dab in the middle of the hills. The Magnolia Voice covers the well-attended community meeting discussing the proposed jail locations.

"A Family At Sunset on Alki Beach" by seattlerealtorgal

Seattlest grew up in a tiny town you've never heard of in Central Florida, where a real sandy ocean beach (on which you could drive) was 20 minutes in one direction, and a crystalline gulf beach was an hour and a half in the other. Now that we live in the Land of the Rain, we wait all year for weeks like these, when the sun is high and hot, the breeze is soft and frequent and there are enough daytime hours to book it to the lake beach after work.

Once Leilani Lanes closes, the 32-lane West Seattle Bowl will be Seattle’s biggest bowling alley.

You know, we love nothing more than a music festival (okay that's a lie, our number one true love is Jupiter Jones of the Three Investigators Series, but we fear that will be unrequited).

Seattlest likes a challenge, especially a slightly kooky one, and then if you add a do-gooder element to it we might find it irresistible. But this one is too tough for us.

West Seattle is just days away from the springtime resurrection of it's lifeline to the downtown waterfront: the water taxi. Beginning May, 1, Three dollars will get you across Elliot Bay aboard the Argosy Sightseer. Strangely, it will only cost you $1 if you can also come up with a valid Metro transfer, so you penny-pinchers can save yourselves $0.50 by going that route. The Sightseer will leave from pier 55 every hour on the half hour from 8-10pm on Saturdays and make the return trip from Seacrest Park on the hour. The full schedule, in all its irregular glory, is here.
