The 2008 football season ended last week for Walter Jones, the Seahawks' offensive tackle and general-prover-of-Einsteinian-physics. Jones was suffering from a knee injury so severe that it would require a cutting-edge procedure called microfracture surgery. The P-I's Danny O'Neil wrote that Jones had headed off to Colorado to have the intricate surgery performed by the world's leading expert, Dr. Richard Steadman.

Guess who's singing the National Anthem prior to Sunday's Seahawks-Cardinals game?
Drat. Three more football games. Three more losses. The Huskies actually looked good before the wheels fell off, losing 39-19 at home to the ASU Sun Devils. The Cougs have shown an ability to score, even if their defense and special teams were non-existent in the 59-28 loss to Arizona. The Seahawks fell to the Miami Dolphins 21-19, continuing the winless streak of West Coast teams traveling to the East Coast this season. TNT beat writer Frank Hughes took advantage of the day off in Miami to report on his visit the country club where Caddyshack was filmed, which helps to salve the wounds of an otherwise bummerish gridiron weekend.
In head coach Mike Holmgren's Monday afternoon press conference, it was revealed that starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's knee problem is not a result of the hit by Justin Tuck in two weeks ago, but was instead a result of the bulging disc problem that has plagued him all season. Hasselbeck sought a second opinion today from an L.A.-based specialist after his knee injury wouldn't respond to treatment last week, and the new diagnosis was revealed as a result. Backup and oft-injured QB Seneca Wallace will start if he's able to practice this week. Deion Branch is also expected to return. UPDATE: NBC's John Madden to skip this week's Seahawks-Buccaneers game, marking the first regular season game he's missed in 28 years, ending a 476-week streak.
TJ Duckett silences critics by scoring 2 TDs. The regular season begins next week.
The Seahawks make this season's only appearance on Monday Night Football tonight (5:00 PT) as they visit the San Diego Chargers in preseason action. Jobs are on the line as the preseason draws to a close and the regular season begins in less than two weeks. Teams are forced to cut 5 players from their rosters tomorrow, bringing their rosters down from 80 to 75 players.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Seahawks contest last weekend. "Jordancda" is our winner, with a damned fine account of the 2005 season, which was our favorite memory too (minus all the jackass Steelers fans decroding my hometown of Detroit during the Super Bowl). Jordancda wins a giant 12th Man flag for the effort. Sadly, the alternate prize is no longer an option. It was to have been a trip to Hawks training camp this week, but this event was canceled by the team due to "weather conditions" which strikes us as curious. (It's FOOTBALL, sheesh.) Thanks to everyone for your patience as we waited for a final decision by the team on the event. Regardless, thank again to everyone who played!
While Seattlest continues our Miami-based advance scouting of the Dolphins game later this season (ok, we are hanging out on the beach), we want to make sure that we give today's Bears-Seahawks pre-season game a little bit of electronic ink too.
Stay tuned tomorrow for an awesome contest during tomorrow evening's Seahawks-Bears game. Prior to tomorrow's game, we'll have another post with more details. There will be prizes and stuff, y'all, including a super-secret prize option that is so super-secret we can't even tell you about it yet. But trust us, it's a righteous bit o' swag. For your chance to win, you'll need to check back manana.
The Seahawks today announced that the popular park-and-ride shuttle buses to Qwest Field for home all home games have been eliminated, due to the Bush Administration's efforts to privatize public transportation. In April, the Federal Transportation Administration forced teams to seek private bids for all previously negotiated contracts with local transit agencies. What is not clear is why the Hawks aren't able to continue the Metro service since the only private bid was deemed incomplete. This was the case with this year's similar Mariners shuttle service, which was also threatened by the ruling. According to the News-Tribune report, the Seahawks are recommending fans should consider taking regular ST and Metro bus service, as well as Sounder. But a news release from Sound Transit yesterday announced that Sounder will not serve the preseason games. Left hand, meet right hand. Please. *****Update: According to an email sent to all Seahawk season ticket-holders this afternoon, ALL park-and-ride shuttles have been eliminated this season. Sigh.
Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren made two major announcements today on the injury front, as the team prepares for his final season at the helm. Marcus Tubbs has been waived and Bobby Engram has an injury that will put him out for 6-8 weeks. Former first-round pick Tubbs was waived today, as the team appears to have given up on the oft-injured defensive tackle. He was attempting to come back from a knee injury, which had kept him out of pre-season drills and required surgery during the 2007 training camp, causing him to miss all of last season. He was widely considered a key element in the team's ability to stop the run.
Former Seahawk cornerback Ken Lucas was involved in a training camp scuffle that was so one-sided he had to be carted off the field and required medical attention. During a special teams drill at this morning's Carolina Panther training camp, Lucas tangled with Pro-Bowl receiver Steve Smith. While training camp scuffles are commonplace as players vie for a place on the roster, serious fights which inflict injury are rare. However, the Lucas-Smith brawl was so intense that even Head Coach John Fox jumped in to break up the fight, along with several other players. Lucas suffered undetermined head injuries. Smith was kicked out of practice.
