Posted We laughed, we cried. No, seriously. to Seattlest
Last night, Seattlest was a cliché. We sat and sobbed through the entire Seattle Opera production of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. Strauss's music is lush, lush, lush, and the SO orchestra played it masterfully under the sure hand of conductor Asher Fisch. The music seems to be Richard's homage to the other Strauss, Johann Jr., as it is full of rich Viennese waltzes. The music alone is swoon-worthy, but when combined with the text,...
Posted A Rollicking Band of Pirates, They to Seattlest
Forget Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest. The true blockbuster of the summer is Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society's Pirates of Penzance, playing at the Bagley Wright Theatre at Seattle Center. As with any Gilbert and Sullivan play, Pirates' plot does not stand up to rigorous analysis, and the G&S Society seems to know this. They treat the ridiculous twists and turns with wit and whimsy, creating a world in which everything seems possible....
Posted Billings and Bruckner and Bernstein -- Oh My! to Seattlest

From their website: Northwest Chamber Chorus concludes its concert season by featuring the Mass in e minor of Anton Bruckner, a gorgeous, romantic work uniquely scored for chorus and a small group of winds. Fuguing tunes, part songs and anthems by...
Posted Macbeth: Full of Sound and Fury to Seattlest
Seattlest learned a very important lesson Saturday night: always look at your press pack before the end of the second intermission. If you wait until then, you may miss out on intermissing in the press room. Ah well. More important than any press room gathering was the reason we were at McCaw Hall in the first place: Macbeth, Verdi’s 9th opera and 1st Shakespearean remake. The opera preserves the play’s drama, but seems to streamline...
Posted Hot Java, Cool Jazz…Man to Seattlest
This Friday you will have the chance to hear tomorrow’s jazz stars today! It’s the 10th anniversary of the Hot Java, Cool Jazz concert at the Paramount, sponsored by Starbucks. The five schools performing tomorrow are Garfield, Roosevelt, Edmonds Woodway, Mountlake Terrace and Shorewood. Seattlest has never been to the Hot Java Cool Jazz concert, but we do have first-hand knowledge of the jazz program at Garfield. If it’s as good as or better than...
