Not to belabor this story, but we think the issue of the rights of bicycle riders to the road is an important one. We ride on the city streets every day and, though some commenters on our post about changes we'd like to see made to Critical Mass in Seattle think that every driver goes out of his or her way to be respectful to us, we know it's not true. Seattle still has a... [continue]
Seven facts in honor of Little Miss Seattlest's first-ever movie, WALL-E, which we saw at the Cinerama—one of three three-panel Cinerama theaters left in the world. FACT: The Seattle Cinerama is not Seattle's original Cinerama. That'd be the Paramount, which sacrificed 1600 seats to fit the screen and three projection booths required. They screened Cinerama films from September 1, 1956, to January 26, 1958. The Cinerama we know and love today opened January 24,... [continue]
"We're playing our (BODY PART) off every day and got nothing to show for it. I'm tired of (VERB ENDING IN -ING) losing, I'm tired of getting my (NOUN) beat, and so have those guys. We gotta change this (NOUN) around and get after it. And only we can do it. The fans are (ADJECTIVE) off, and I'm (ADJECTIVE) off and the players are (ADJECTIVE FOR USELESS) off. And that's the way it is...I'm tired... [continue]
Was two weeks ago in this space, Seattlest James took up the cudgel for Gypsy dinners, falling right into the outlaws' trap. No and no, wrong and wrong. These guys aren't romantic Zorros, they're behaving like petulant teenagers. Might as well piss off our good friends at Gypsy, Vagabond, Caché, OnePot, KillTheRestaurant and Culinary Communion. You got busted. Somebody called the Liquor Board to complain that a cooking class used—oh my God—wine to deglaze a... [continue]
We respectfully disagree with our colleagues. Having gone into our second caucus as undecideds, we emerged firmly decided: the caucus stinks. And we weren't even invested in any candidate this time around. The Slog's Erica Barnett makes a good case against it. We'll concede that it was nice to see some neighbors; however, we don't really care to meet our neighbors in this particular context. Block parties, barbeques, chats across the fence, and pleasantries... [continue]
We here at Seattlest really wanted to go out and caucus on Saturday, however, HBO is showing Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. So we made some calls, and the DNC gave us permission to hold a special caucus today. They even threw in a couple delegates that Utah wasn’t going to use: Courtney: I'm caucusing for Obama even though it kills me not to be an active part of trying to put the first... [continue]
We've been Ellen Forney fans since we read "I Was Seven in '75" -- back when it ran in The Rocket. Her latest project is Lust, a collection of the "Lustlab Ad of the Week" cartoons she does for The Stranger, published this month by Fantagraphics. We interviewed Forney about the cartoon at Georgetown's All City Coffee, just down the block from the Fantagraphics store where there will be a book launch party tomorrow night.... [continue]
"Vanguard of an Invading Army" by sea turtle We don't usually go for the silly photoshop pix, but this one from the Seattlest Flickr Pool was just too great to pass up.... [continue]
Last week we were taking Husky football with a friend who was upset that the University hadn't fired coach Ty Willingham. We mentioned that, though he hadn't won many games, Willingham had restored integrity to the football program. She was unmoved. "The university does a lot of good," she said. "The football team's job is to win games." But now our friend has read the Seattle Times' stomach-turning series about the alleged rape, attempted murder,... [continue]
It looks like "Sophazilla" has her own little Seattle in this shot from tainted dream in the Seattlest Flickr Pool. Or maybe this is a capture from Cloverfield II? Thanks for contributing, tainted!... [continue]

In yesterday's PI, Regina Hackett wrote about Ryan Hobson, a local artist who's put together the Serial Killer Trivia Game but who's having a hard time getting it published. Apparently people think it's too morbid -- one publisher rejected it because "it's too dark, morbid, not funny, not PC and sick-o," though that critic did "admire his execution (design/production)." We're not amazed that a nice illustrator of children's books has a dark side. We've been... [continue]
photo courtesy of caseysail in the Seattlest Flickr pool. We hope this isn't a growing trend. From the Croc to the Sunset Bowl to all of Seattle's bars, it seems as though any place of which beer is an integral component is endangered with stifling regulation or closure or even the wrecking ball. The very latest, of course, is a portion of the old Georgetown brewery just a scant few days after the 104th... [continue]

Photo by FrayLo Sunday, the Times' Danny Westneat had the story of 91-year-old Rose Walter, who was ejected from Von's Cafe on Pike in December because she didn't have her ID. Rose manages an apartment building on Lower Queen Anne--the very apartment building, in fact, that our sister lived in until last summer. She (Rose) is just about the sweetest lady you can imagine, and we provide this anecdote as evidence: Our sister owns a... [continue]
We're not actually gloating over WaMu's travails -- there are too many lives involved likely to be disrupted. But there's no denying the majesty with which its home loan mortgage unit steered into the subprime iceberg. The Seattle Times headline reads: "WaMu posts first quarterly loss in a decade," thanks to a $1.78 billion writedown by the home loaners. Oddly, the bigger news -- "For the full year, WaMu reported a $67 million loss —... [continue]

We all know what happens to kids who attend private school. Their folks buy them 16 years of education, they get a job at Daddy's firm, and eventually they sit in board rooms and devise ways to increase profits--usually by laying off kids who went to public school. The forward-thinking youth at private Kennedy High don't want the hopeless, powerless lives of their public school lessers to come as a shock, so they are preparing... [continue]
