Apropos of it being 2:18 on a relatively banal Tuesday, here's Bohemian Rhapsody as sung by the Muppets. (via Chicagoist).

"Not Really Sure if I Believe This Guy" by Chip Py, from our Flickr pool

If Seattle is going to make national news, it might as well be for ninjas. A lone man was found by Seattle Police on Monday night screaming atop a 5 foot fence post. He claimed he wasn’t being chased, and merely "overestimated his own ninja skills." This overestimation led to impalement atop said fence post and a trip to Harborview Medical Center. Apparently, the man found himself on the fence post after fleeing a fight outside of a sports bar. Police believe alcohol may have played a (very significant) role.

If inept ninjas weren’t enough for Seattle, today brings the news that a local man was shot with a crossbow Wednesday evening. The attacker apparently hid and waited outside the victim’s home. The victim is reportedly is in stable condition after also being taken to Harborview Medical Center. The attacker remains at large, presumably still in possession of a crossbow with one less arrow in its quiver.

Together, these reports raise some very serious questions. Is the change in seasons ushering in a new era of creative weaponry? Where are the pirates in all of this? And, is it just a coincidence that the new Warner Bros. movie Ninja Assassin comes out next week? We ponder the answers to these questions and hope that the next wave of ninja news isn’t quite so gruesome.

Ye Olde General Store

There's a new general store in town, folks. Wait...what's a general store? We don't really know, but we're sure we've seen 'em before on Little House on the Prairie or some other historical series on TV.

Nicole Miller, the mastermind behind popular men's retailer, Blackbird, has just launched her latest project: a general store. Okay, so maybe not a real general store, but Field House, located right behind Blackbird in Ballard, is evocative of the old Western, rustic general stores, circa turn of the century. Field House carries men's and women's clothing, but keeping it consistent with the old-school theme, we found 100% wool classics like good ol' Pendelton and Filson. The long and narrow interior is full of sturdy wooden cabinets, shelves, and barrels, full of random odds and ends like various food products, but also other unpredictables like soaps, candles, tools, seashells, and perfumes...oh yeah, and charm.

Open from 10:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m., the Field House is located at 5465 Leary Avenue NW, just off Market.

UmberDove’s Etsy store is awash with color: hand-sewn pillowcases, pouches, clutches, and table runners each patch-worked together in a blend of fabric and shape. The artist, Seattleite Kelly Clark, sews and posts new items on a regular basis…and they sell just as quickly. Her whimsical thematic pieces are a mish-mash of fabric scraps, often punctuated with floaty wool feathers or free-hand machine embroidered springs of plant life. These elements of the natural world also strongly influence Kelly’s more focused work: paintings, poetry, and sculpture. But let’s learn a little bit more about her sewing, shall we?

Tell me about yourself.

I am an artist who lives in leather boots and fedoras, compulsively collects fabric (and must touch every single bolt in the fabric store), sings aloud while painting, finds rocks in the pockets of every jacket I own, drinks coffee in the morning and wine at night, wears too much turquoise (wait, not possible), and breathes art every day.

When did you begin your relationship with sewing machines? How did you evolve into making the projects seen in your Etsy store?

For as long as I can remember, I've had an intense sense of "I can make it myself" whenever it comes to textile goodness. On my fourth Christmas, my father gave me my first sewing kit and taught me how to sew little blankets for my model horses. From there I moved onto outfits for the cats, raiding my mother's vintage fabric stash for bedroom decorations, and restyling thrift store clothes into new, more "interesting" fashions (it was all in the eye of the beholder...). In college I bought my very first sewing machine and signed up for a textile class, where I began creating stitched and printed fabric art pieces. Almost two years ago I had a flash of inspiration (probably around midnight and after a double Vivacé cappuccino) to try turning those flat fabric pieces into a usable, three-dimensional object. And that night, the textiles that UmberDove is know for were born.

Many of your projects are inspired by nature. What thematic elements tend to find their way into your sewing projects and how do you begin the process of "sewing together" an idea or inspiration?

I try to live with eyes wide open and am convinced I might die if I don't spend time daily in nature. I find myself constantly noting the colors of the sky, the gradation of autumnal leaves, the pop of brilliant rocks on the grey beaches. When I return home, I recall those colors and reinterpret the combinations using fabric. My sewing table faces out to a few of my favorite trees, and the waving leaves (as well as the feathers from a multitude of songbirds) continually find their way onto my pieces in the form of appliquéd wool and free-hand stitched shapes.

How long do your sewing projects normally take? How much have you honed down the process since you first began?

Those first couple pillows were serious labors of love! I'm very much a learn/invent as you go type of artist which sometimes translates into pure brilliance, other times into intense disaster! More than once I've walked out on my sewing machine after an argument with inanimate objects. (Confession: I've spent so much time making up my own patterns, that I never use commercial ones. Ever. I'm not even sure I would know how to follow a pattern....) Since those early days I've streamlined my process quite a bit, and at any given time, will have up to eight pieces all in the works, each one taking from one to four hours to complete.

What kind of fulfillment do you find from sewing as compared to your other artistic endeavors? (For example, you call painting your "soul work" and the "true backbone of my artistic life.") How is sewing uniquely satisfying for you?

I have very busy hands and more ideas than I can ever keep up with. In my painting studio, the work I create takes an intense amount of soul searching, visual research, time consuming detail work and technical process. Sewing has truly become my "relaxing" art; I'm able to make decisions based purely on color and composition so the pieces come together quickly (read: super satisfying). I'm also able to sew in my home, which translates to [being] able to sew into the wee hours of the night, when that second wind kicks in (some call it insomnia), and there is so much artistic energy pouring through my fingertips that I just have to create,

Any notable DIY or sewing communities/events in Seattle?

Stitches on Capitol Hill is hands down my favorite local fabric joint. Amy, the owner, couldn't be friendlier, the fabric selection is well-edited, and they host great sewing and knitting events. I also love hitting up the monthly I Heart Rummage arts and crafts for fantastic, functional, local art.

Favorite places in Seattle?

For being outside, in nature, while still in the city: Discovery Park in Magnolia, Golden Gardens in Ballard, Interlaken Park. All around favorites: Vivacé Espresso on Broadway for cappuccinos, the Ballard Sunday Farmer's Market (and the whole strip of fantastic boutiques along Market Ave. swoon!) for a shopping outing, Portage Bay for breakfast and Chez Gaudy for intimate speakeasy dining, the Triple Door for music and burlesque shows, Kobo on Roy Ave. and Gossamer Collective on 18th Ave. for amazing handmade gifts and art (and UmberDove textiles...). I could go on, Seattle is just so fantastic!

What is the secret to having such nice arms?

Solo midnight dance parties with lots of arm waving. It's true.

Woodland Park zookeepers tossed soccer balls to some of their charges last Wednesday to commemorate the first round of the MLS Cup Playoff Western Conference Semifinals, which ended, of course, in a lame tie. The Sounders better win Sunday or AMY GET MAD!! Regardless, check out the 15-year-old, 850-pound grizzly brothers, Keema and Denali, demolishing the hapless balls while five-month-old snow leopard cubs Gobi and Batu and the zoo’s Humboldt penguins take a more friendly, frisky approach. The soccer balls are part of the zoo’s animal enrichment program which aims to promote natural animal behavior and keep the animals mentally stimulated.

Image courtesy of the artist. Image slips $65 each.

Seattle’s vintage clothing and boutique stores are some of the best places to find pieces done by local artists.

We stumbled upon these slips while browsing the racks of the fifties-femme shop Pretty Parlor on Capitol Hill, and brought one up to the counter along with a simple question: "Who made this?"

The color richness and quality of design led us to assume the slips were printed, so we were startled to learn that the flowery prints were drawn by hand, and therefore each slip was a unique piece, that they were completely wearable and washable and would not fade.

Along with the fact that each slip itself is already a vintage piece, the whole concept comes together to solidly promote the former underthings to a more prominent clothing status. Yes, yes, we like these very much indeed.

Let’s hear from the artist, Julia, on the process of putting Sharpie tip to slip.

Tell me a little about yourself.

I was born in Seattle, in the Madrona area. Both my parents are artists and teachers, and I started drawing all the time when I was really young, pretty much as soon as I could hold a crayon. I went to the Seattle Waldorf School in North Seattle/Lake City for K-8 and the curriculum there is VERY art-based. Then I went to The Northwest School, did a lot of art there, and started to kinda figure out what types I liked better then others. I graduated from NWS spring 2009 and I'm going to Western Washington University for now, and I really like it so far. I'll be trying to get into the art program as soon as I can so I can figure out where to go next!

What gave you the idea to start drawing on slips?

I first got the idea because I had this kinda weird slip lying around at my house that had gotten nail polish spilled on it, and I was trying to figure out how to wear it/fix it. I just got out the Sharpies and started turning the nail polish dots into flowers and it just kept going until the whole bottom was covered in Sharpie flowers and designs. I think like a year and a half ago or so, my sister and mom went into Pretty Parlor and my sister was wearing it, and they decided that they wanted to carry them, which was great.

How long does it take you to complete a single slip? What is your process? Where do you find the items that you draw on?

It takes about 5-6 hours to do the regular full slips and anywhere from 3-5 hours for the shorter half slips or tops. Pretty much the process is: sit down with a huge box of sharpies and start drawing. I don’t sketch or anything, because a lot of the time the style of a particular slip will change as I work on it. I just put flowers of vines or whatever in the places I think it will look interesting and flattering. It’s basically a process that makes slips wearable as more then slips which I think is fun and interesting.

I get the slips or tops or whatever from pretty much anywhere. I get a lot from Value Village and Goodwill. Anna, the owner of Pretty Parlor, sometimes gives me plain slips from the store; I draw on them and then give then back. They can pretty much come from anywhere, which is cool because that makes them all different and it allows me to price them differently.

Do you take custom orders?

I have never done a custom order except for friends. I would be totally interested in doing that though; it would be fun if someone had something in mind that they were looking for, or had something they wanted the drawings on. The only problem for me is that it is sometimes hard to find slips.

Can your slips be seen anywhere else besides Pretty Parlor?

I have had them sold at another store in Madrona called Jaywalk for about 2 years or so before they went to Pretty Parlor, but they didn't sell as much there because there isn't enough of a sorta high-end client base and not enough young people. So right now the slips are only at Pretty Parlor.

For more information or to place an order, you can contact Julia at cylenceisavirtue@aol.com

If that Alaskan Way Viaduct earthquake simulation video left the coppery taste of panic in your mouth, we invite you to take in the relative placidity of some other WSDOT simulations. These design simulations show three proposed options (Options A, K, and L) for the new SR 520 bridge, and they're kind of incredibly relaxing.

Although the simulations were released this April, consider them the antidote to the sight of Seattle lit only by the flames of waterfront fires. Rather than showing major roads collapsing into flames in excruciating detail, these move with the serenity of a pod of whales. Accompanied by music we swear we've heard in an acupuncturist's lobby, these depict the new bridge options as efficient, utopian dream. The camera begins at a bird's-eye view of the I-5/520 intersection on a beautiful cloudless day, then zooms in slowly to show traffic moving steadily across the bridge, following cars across the mirror-still water. It all looks like the perfect morning commute. Option A:

That's not to say the possibility of Michael Bay-level disaster doesn't exist for the 520--both the Evergreen Point Bridge and the Portage Bay Bridge are as vulnerable to earthquake damage as the Viaduct. Do not click that link unless you relish the aforementioned coppery taste of panic.

Neighborhood shout-outs are fun! Because then everyone knows you live there, in that neighborhood! Seattleite couple hoofinitdesigns takes their original ‘hood designs and hand-screens them onto cotton t-shirts. Simple as that. For the time being, only Queen Anne, Pioneer Square, Ballard and Fremont tees are available, but we're rooting for some new neighborhood designs to be posted in the future.

Update: New neighborhood designs posted! Green Lake, Capitol Hill, Alki and Wallingford now available for sale as well.

"278/365 I voted!" by NW Sunshine , from our Flickr pool

We here at Seattlest know you want to be educated about the issues and people on the ballot in the upcoming election. You want to, but you can’t at the moment. You have to do laundry. Then, you have to check facebook, and then check email, and then check out that link on YouTube with the dancing baby and then… wait, what were we talking about? Ah yes, an election. Ok, here we go. We promise this will be quick and painless. When you’re done, you’ll be ready to tackle that ballot and perform your civic duty with aplomb:

The Washington Secretary of State’s website has both an electronic version of their voter guide and a video voter guide.

On the local level, King County has its own electronic version of the voter guide, along with video voter guides that we couldn’t watch because Windows wanted us to install some random plug-in and we gave up.

Another source for non-partisan analysis is the League of Women Voters. They’ve got a voter guide up in a seven page pdf. It’s much more digestible reading than the Secretary of State’s legalese.

The Progressive Voter Guide (not to be confused with The Progressive Party of Washington) is just what it sounds like. It’s got a handy section for Seattle and its maze of charter amendments. Interestingly, they haven’t taken a side in the mayoral race explaining that “both candidates are generally progressive.”

The Seattle Times has its endorsements list in one place. They’re rolling out the big ones at the end though, so don’t click here if you’re looking for their pick for mayor (to be published October 25).

And finally, The Stranger’s election guide supports a “greasy, half-empty tub of Crisco” for Port of Seattle Commissioner Position No. 4 (along with a few other candidates and positions).

Good for you, you’re officially an Informed Voter. You now have our permission to get back to that dancing baby video.

Until recently, the only English translations were incomplete, ancient affairs; dooming the novel to obscurity. Award-winning translator and Seattle resident Paul Norlén quested successfully to publish a new, complete translation; to recreate Lagerlöf’s story more fully and faithfully than ever before for the benefit of an English-speaking audience.

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of Lagerlöf’s Nobel Prize - the first awarded to a woman - the Northwest Film Forum will be screening the remastered version of the silent film this evening, complete with an introduction by Paul Norlén and live accompaniment by Murl Allen Sanders. We chatted with Mr. Norlén about the process of translating a novel, his thoughts on the film, and his quest to make one his favorite Swedish works accessible to millions more readers.

Seattlest: At this point in your career, how many books have you translated? How are you contacted for projects, and how did you decide to do the translation for The Saga of Gösta Berling?

Paul Norlén: By now I've translated 10 or 12 books. Most of the time I've been asked to translate the books. When I first started playing around with translation, I would work on something that interested me and then try to get it published. That's not an easy process.
I first thought about translating one of Selma Lagerlöf's books 12 or more years ago. Nothing happened then, which is probably a good thing, but about three years ago I started thinking about Lagerlöf again, especially the fact that she's not very well known in English, although she's still one of Sweden's most widely-read authors. And just about everyone in Sweden is familiar with The Saga of Gösta Berling and can quote the opening sentence.

S: So at what point did everyone realize that a new translation would coincide with the 100-year anniversary of Lagerlöf’s Nobel Prize?

PN: Well, to be honest, I saw that centennial on the horizon and thought it would be a good selling point for the book.

S: What was your process for translating this book? How long did it take to complete the project?

PN: The first step in the process for this book was deciding to do it in the first place. I did sample translations of two chapters, then put together a book proposal. I feel very fortunate that Penguin Classics was interested in the idea. They've been great to work with, and I've really enjoyed working with my editor, as well as with the copyeditor and marketing people at Penguin. They are a class act. Once we decided to go ahead, I spent about six months on the rest of the translation.

S: You have translated modern texts as well; Amberville, for example, is a contemporary detective-noir novel. How did your experience differ here from your work on The Saga of Gösta Berling?

PN: It is somewhat different to translate a contemporary author's work. When I translated Amberville and two follow-up books by Tim Davys (a pseudonym, by the way), the author ended up making some changes to the original Swedish version of the book based on the translation. There was some interesting give-and-take.

S: Selma Lagerlöf used a very unique writing style for The Saga of Gösta Berling; it’s a dramatic, romantic, sort of magic realist approach to telling a story. Did this - due to difficulties with transforming the Swedish language into English - create any unique challenges for you?

PN: Some of the challenges in translating this book have to do with the differences between Swedish and English. Sentence structure is different, and passive constructions are used much more frequently in Swedish than in English. In the time period for Gösta Berling, the way people spoke to one another was also incredibly formal, especially from an American perspective. For Selma Lagerlöf's style, in this book in particular, she often writes very simply and directly which, believe it or not, is really difficult to translate convincingly. Some passages are very lyrical, others are melodramatic, and she often directly addresses the reader. It always takes a little time to adjust to a particular author's style, maybe 50-100 pages.

S: Going back to your earlier comment about your desire to put this project together - can you be more specific about your appreciation for The Saga of Gösta Berling?

PN: Having spent a lot of time with this book — I'm not sure how many times I've read it — I find that I admire it even more now than when I started working on it. It's good to remember that this was Lagerlöf's first book, and it's very passionate, almost wild in certain respects. It's also an unusual novel in the sense that it follows a basic story line, but also makes frequent detours, with short chapters about minor characters that can be read as stand-alone short stories. Those are some of my favorite chapters in the book.

S: In the foreword to the new translation you say “[you have] tried to convey the author’s distinct voice in English and produce a narrative that is a pleasure to read - as it is in Swedish.” In what sense do you feel your version is an improvement on previous translations?

PN: Obviously I hope that this version is more enjoyable to read than the previous translations (both of which came out in 1898, by the way). The older translations left some parts out, and sometimes even added things. The language comes off as a bit stilted as well. I do hope that this new translation will encourage other translators, and publishers, to re-introduce Lagerlöf's work in English. She has a lot to offer.

S: Have you seen the film version? What are your thoughts?

PN: It's a marvelous film in many ways — the scene where Gösta Berling and Elisabet are in a sleigh being chased by wolves is incredible. The film version covers less than half of the contents of the book, so even if you've seen the film, there are still plenty of new stories to read in the book itself.
By the way, film versions have been made of many of Lagerlöf's works, including some of the most successful and important films in the silent era. She was very interested in how her works were adapted to film.

The Transit Holy Grail: One Bus Away

One of the hardest things about being a regular public transit commuter is the constant sense of helplessness. Sure, you're supporting your community. Occasionally you're involuntarily providing a destitute, possibly drunk man a shoulder to sleep on, you're saving money on gas, and you're helping the environment! But sometimes...you just want to know where your goddamned bus is.

Brian Ferris, a grad student in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington apparently knows that feeling well. Some time ago he put together onebusaway.org, a site that uses and improves upon real-time bus arrival information provided by MyBus for all King Count Metro routes. The site offers an almost absurd number of possible channels by which to access this information; a phone number to call, a Google Maps mashup website, SMS interface, an iPhone optimized webpage, a text only page for older phones, and now the native iPhone App.

While all are helpful, the iPhone app seems the most accessible. The default screen is a location-based map with nearby stops highlighted, which can be crucial when you're in a hurry and on the verge of powerwalking. Bookmark your frequently used stops and find out how many minutes you have with 2 taps.

We certainly commend Seattle Metro for having their own iPhone App. It's a good effort and a step in the right direction, but One Bus Away is better for a number of reasons. For one, their data attempts to incorporate "info for every bus stop, not just a few timepoints". Their search is more robust with options for route, address and stop number, vs. Metro's route and more complicated intersection/location search. More importantly, its simply been more accurate. Also, it's app icon is much cuter.

Created by a fellow frustrated bus rider, the app is just a portion of a commendable undertaking to improve a lot of people's commutes. They're not joking around about feedback and want to hear from you how to improve the service. And thanks to Nokia Research and a grant from the National Science Foundation, it's free.

Download now.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ninjatira/ / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Mayor Nickels’ 2010 city budget is on the table before the city council, and within it is a $2.6 million proposed decrease in the Seattle Public Library budget for next year - approximately 5% in cuts. Twenty-one library branches will see their operating hours reduced in 2010, and expect a repeat of this year’s week-long library systemwide closure to trim expenses even further.

But with library use steadily trending upwards, the library is looking for all of the help it can get. You can volunteer at the Seattle Public Library in several different capacities, but one of the most rewarding ways to participate is through the library’s Homework Help program, which offers free after-school tutoring to K-12 and ESL students at select city branches. Four Homework Help centers in particular could use a boost in tutors: the Columbia City Branch, the NewHolly Branch, the Rainier Beach Branch, and the South Park Branch.

Any and all tutors city-wide are welcome at the library’s Math Tutoring Tips for Middle and High School Students session, held this Saturday at the Douglass-Truth Branch. Also of note: Seattle Tutoring Coalition is hosting two upcoming All City Tutor training sessions at Aki Kurose Middle School on November 5 and February 6.

For more information and application materials, contact the Seattle Public Library Volunteer Services Coordinator at Anne.Vedella@spl.org by Friday, October 16.

Math Tutoring Tips for Middle and High School Students // October 17, 10:15 a.m. to 12 :15 p.m. // Douglass-Truth Branch, 2330 East Yesler // Free, registration required

Seattle Tutoring Coalition’s All City Tutor Training // November 5 and February 6 // Aki Kurose Middle School, 3928 S Graham St. // Free
Ping! Exclamation Point!

Anyone that has worked for, with, or anywhere near "the man" should dislike the word ping. It's too easy to immediately associate the word with a bothersome, middle aged project manager saying, "Let me look into that and I'll ping you." Why can't you just say email? Why?

We begrudgingly admit that in the case of this new iPhone app, the name is rather fitting. The application allows free registered users to message each other via push notifications over the data connection, rather than SMS. This is rad for a number of reasons. Most obviously, users of Ping can potentially avoid paying AT&T's reprehensibly priced SMS plans. It also allows the opportunity to communicate with people who have no SMS plan at all, such as complete freaks or friends overseas.

One thing Blackberry has always had over iPhones, and that converts deeply miss, is Blackberry Messenger. It's real time, it's free, it's easy; it's texting on steroids. Ping isn't quite there yet, but it's a step in the right direction. The interface is simple, with a list of ongoing conversations and the ability to link them with your existing contacts to see their real name and photo. Multiple users have reported that messages periodically show up twice. It's probably still buggy since it launched recently, but we're guessing this will be remedied soon given the app has been launched into the immediate limelight by reaching the holy top 25. Push notifications appear to be much louder than SMS notifications, so either turn your volume down or get ready to change your shorts.

Did we mention that it's completely free? Stay connected with your iPhone Seattleites!

All that is good and well, but we know what you're really worried about - what do you now call sexting? Is it now spinging?

Download it.
