One of those all-American hotdog carts, the kind you see in Belltown late at night, will cost you about $500, give or take. And, for another $700, there's an outfit in Chicago that will teach you how to run it. (Sample from the weeklong curriculum: dress the dog, not the bun.)
Chef Maria Hines of Tilth Restaurant will be on "The Martha Stewart Show" today at 3:00 on KONG TV. She is one of three chefs featured on the Female Chefs Show and will be preparing butter-poached prawns with couscous. Chef Hines, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest last year, was one of only two women who took home awards out of the nineteen total winners. Clearly female chefs haven't been given their due and that fact has drawn a lot more attention recently. The theme of last year's James Beard Awards gala was "Women in Food." Unfortunately only sixteen of the total ninety-six nominees were women. The past two Beard Awards winners for the Northwest have been women and this year there are five, including Rachel Yang from Joule, still in the running. For more on this discussion check out Charlotte Druckman's "Why Are There No Great Women Chefs?" article in the most recent issue of Gastronomica.
Locavores have it easy in Seattle. We have access to fresh and delicious ingredients year round. Eating local has many benefits. It's a practice that saves on the distance a food travels from production to consumption, the pollution of land and water, health problems among farm workers, the depletion of oil, and the contribution of agriculture to climate change. While locally grown foods tend to be safer, if they do become contaminated they are likely to affect fewer people.
Many will be mystified when they see this mass of "string" in the bakery. Some think it looks like a little mop head, absentmindedly shoved in the showcase. We, admittedly, were mistaken the first time we saw a Mont Blanc. It was at a Tokyo bakery, in the shadow of Mount Fuji. How is a ball of pasta considered dessert, we wondered? And why are the Japanese so crazy about this concoction?
This is a great neighborhood coffeeshop doing a lot of things right, in quite the unexpected location. During the day they cater to the usual Suburbanite Soccer Mom crowd with kids in tow, laptop shielded students and a handful of groups conducting business over their lattes.
The weekend after we were first introduced to the Cherpumple we were obsessed with wanting to make it and couldn't get our mind off of it. We just loved the whole idea--three pies baked into three cakes, to then be slathered with as much Duncan Hines cheesecake frosting as you could get your hands on--INCREDIBLE. Honestly, we don't even really like pie and we don't necessarily even care about eating the Cherpumple; We just want to see if it can actually be made.
Ahhhhh, Valentine's Day. Roses, candy, love letters, and all of the stressful lovely expectations that come along with it. We like the idea of having a special day set aside for telling your significant other how much you care about them, but when it comes to rushing out and buying things to prove that love, we begin to lose interest quickly.
There is nothing more important to the art of seduction and romance than a great imagination. Unfortunately, there is no magical formula for getting someone into bed, but with some intrigue, titillation and charm, sexual arousal will not be far behind. Anyone can buy flowers or chocolate, but why not inject some fun and passion into the evening by testing out a time honored aphrodisiac. From elegant main courses to simply delicious side dishes and tapas, mussels are enjoyed stuffed, baked or broiled on the half shell with toppings.
In some ways, this is a downtown battle of batters and preparation. But in a bigger sense, this is a battle between Le Mont Saint-Michel and Liege, as we compare Mobatta's crepes and Sweet Iron's waffles.
Though well known throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific, pomelos aren't commonly seen in the United States. It doesn't help the pomelo's case that there is so much confusion over its name. Not since Sean Combs - aka Puffy, aka Puff Daddy, aka P. Diddy, aka Diddy has there been so much confusion over a name. Often seen spelled as "pumelo" or "pummelo," it is also referred to as "shaddock" for the 17th Century seafaring captain who introduced it to the Bahamas and Jamaica. Growing up in Hawaii, we knew the fruit as "jabong".
The doors are open at Seattle's brand new Hard Rock Cafe. Today's "soft-opening" doesn't come with the pomp and rock that the Grand Opening celebration will bring in the future, but for anyone who has been interested in seeing what the company has done with the place and which Seattle relics they've managed to lay their hands on, a full menu and service staff await.
Seattlest favorite Bamboo Garden has been shut down by the authorities! The Bellevue-based restaurant was closed for a litany of health code violations.
Get a free original Grand Slam today at any Denny's from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. We know it's a little gross, but it's also a lot satisfying. And it's free. While you're at it, have a moment of silence for the now-bulldozed Ballard Denny's -- the iconic building, designed in the Googie style was bulldozed in 2008. We'll see you at the crossroads, Ballard Denny's.
Ambiance/Clientele: Soulfood serves the best, most-consistent coffee on the Eastside in an uber-relaxed, community based setting. The coffeehouse is towards the back of the hippy-new age bookshop and is a great place to relax over a game of chess, book or laptop. They have numerous tables in addition to a living room-like circle of comfy chairs surrounded by local art on the walls. A couple nights a week Soulfood offers the best live music on the Eastside offering an ecletic mix of folk, jazz and rock. The first friday of every month is usually reserved for an incarnation of Twirl, Soulfood's owner Clint McCune's band.
Each month, City Arts' Dish-Off challenges two chefs to prepare a dish based on a song. This month's may be the most provocative to date.
Regardless, we chose instead to do a recipe on homemade buffalo wings because that's what they want, what they love, and more importantly, what they'll eat (and hopefully thank you for). This was our first time making buffalo wings, and we were actually quite shocked by just exactly how much they taste like any others that you might get with a drunken pizza delivery order. If we would have realized long ago how easy they were to make on our own, there would have been many past Super Bowls where they would have been a favorite.
We tasted beers that featured bacon, peppermint, smoked malt, pumpkins, and even a nettle beer. However, the event went from happy stroll in the parking lot to clusterfuck in a hurry, in part because the owners and staff of the Water Street did not put fans outside on standby. It would have been helpful they considered safety first, even if it meant shedding some people at the door while retaining those inside.
Daniele International Inc. is expanding its January 23rd recall of 1.26 million pounds of salami, adding 17,000 pounds of sausage products as a result of a discovery of Salmonella in a salami product reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
