Go West!: BOATHOUSEGATE 2011
Every Friday, we post the week's happenings in West Seattle, Seattle's island town.
- You may remember that Marination Mobile beat out hyperlocal Alki Crab & Fish as the new operator for the Seacrest Boathouse after the latter's contract with the city expired, leaving the boat dock potentially fish-and-chipsless, ice cream barless, and sandwichless. It's not just Alki Crab & Fish that's bummed out. As Marination Mobile leaves the Boathouse fish-and-chipsless and ice cream barless, and, you know, roast beef on rye-less, people (and dogs?) are pretty pissed. The previous operator's protest is currently under review. Personally, even though I don't eat crab or fish, it'll be kind of weird not having them there.
- In case you've been under a rock or in space or something, the Occupy Port Protests happened, and, in terms with citizens' relationships with police officers, it didn't go too well. Even a minister is accusing SPD of punching him in the head; meanwhile, the SPD has released video of protesters allegedly provoking them.
- In heartwarming, fluffy news, local dogs got their pictures taken with Santa Paws!
- Discussions of school overcrowding continues. The latest proposal includes re-opening Boren, plus adding portables.
- Some West Seattleites started filming a webseries that is apparently like The Office but with superheroes.
- Harbor Properties has started construction on a new property dubbed The Nova Project, which, coincidentally, is also the name of my high school.
- A shed caught fire due to too many extension cords.
- John Novotny, a burglar who targeted both the Arrowhead Gardens assisted living facility and some local homes for sale, has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
- The hairstylists at VAIN are expanding into West Seattle.
- A local Essential Tremor patient was successfully treated with a new procedure. Hooray!
