Seattle Monologuist Mike Daisey Performs At Occupy Broadway

tatesj_thumb.jpg It's probably safe to say that the Occupy movement has become a nearly ubiquitous presence in the cultural landscape -- there's even an Occupy Facebook event in the works, for Pete's sake.

So, when we heard about the Occupy Broadway 24-hour event, in which the protestors take up residency on NYC's Great White Way, we couldn't help but roll our eyes a little. And then this NSFW clip of Mike Daisey, the nationally renown monologuist with roots in Seattle, surfaced.

It begins with Daisey's trademarked cogent and literate rambling, which is highlighted by Occupiers doing the odd hands-in-the-air-fingers-a-waving thing they do. Then, at around the 13m00s mark, things start to get good. It begins with Daisey talking about going to Bloomberg Radio to speak about his show, The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs (which just closed at the Public last night) on the day after Bloomberg used the NYPD to force out Occupy Wall Street from Zuccotti Park -- when the interviewer asked him a question about denialism (17m05s), which, as those who have seen it, has some bearing on Daisey's show. From there, things get hilarious, and damning of the man whose administration has been defined by this recent abuse of power. How it ends, we will leave for you to find out.

The whole video is embedded below; it provides proof positive that this time of civil unrest has been a long time coming, and its resonance and ubiquity should not be surprising.

Again, NSFW.
