Now, the police are asking for the public's help to locate the teens, who stole Vega's house keys, jacket, and cell phone--none of which have been recovered yet.
In addition to owning his salon, Vega was a prominent Filipino community member, who was an active participant in the LGBT community. However, his death is not yet being treated as a hate crime.
Mayor Mike McGinn released the statement and plea for public assistance yesterday on his blog, which offered the following information, in addition to the call for new information, no matter how small it may seem.
Danny Vega was going for a walk in his neighborhood when he was attacked by three African-American males who were approximately 18 years old. The suspects stole several items and then fled the area, according to evidence gathered by our police department. Mr. Vega was able to walk home and call police. Our fire department also responded, transporting him to Harborview Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Mr. Vega soon slipped into a coma. He died of his injuries yesterday.
Any information regarding this very sad case is requested. Civilians can anonymously call the police at 206-233-5000 with whatever they may know.
