A Thanksgiving Feast of Seattle Food Writing

THANKSGIVING.JPG Seattle’s a city that reads, but it’s also a city that writes. And we’re grateful for the abundance of good food writing. Here are a few favorite posts to bookmark and enjoy over the long Thanksgiving weekend, from Seattle writers and bloggers.

  • Are you hosting your Thanksgiving dinner? Kathleen Flinn, author of the recently released book "The Kitchen Counter Cooking School" offers a few tips on how to ease anxiety in the Thanksgiving kitchen.

  • If you want a vegetarian-friendly appetizer, Dana Wootton has a scrumptious-sounding recipe for squash hummus and flatbread.

  • Need some inspiration for growing your own holiday feasts? Tara Austen Weaver of Tea and Cookies shows us the wonder that is her Harvestfest, a Thanksgiving-style celebration featuring produce that she grew in her own Seattle urban garden.

  • If you need a psychological break from the Thanksgiving craziness, Shauna James Ahern (Gluten Free Girl) talks about the beauty of Thanksgiving imperfection and “letting it rest.”

  • Lisa of Gluten Free Foodies offers some suggestions on entertaining guests who need to be gluten-free (check out her suggestion for donating gluten-free goods to food banks, as well).

  • For the culinary ambitious, who might wonder what else to do with pumpkin puree, Brook Hurst Stephens of Learn to Preserve offers a recipe for pumpkin ketchup.

  • If you're already prepped to think about gift-giving, Keren Brown (aka “Frantic Foodie,” author of this year's Food Lover's Guide to Seattle) shows us some favorite food-related gift baskets that she’s assembled.
  • And for those of you who’ve just gotta have some kind of Asian food after your American feast, you can check out the Spilled Milk podcast about Banh Mi from Matthew Amster-Burton and Molly Wizenberg (Orangette).

Here’s hoping that this list, like the best Thanksgiving tables, holds something for everyone.
