This Week in Lit: Fantagraphics, Fables and the American Family

birds.jpg Being a holiday week and all, events are a little sparse—but we still do have some good ones! So get your turkey-stuffed bodies out of the house, and enjoy your week in Seattle lit events.

Sharon Ewell Foster at the Northwest African American Museum:
Sharon Ewell Foster will be speaking about her new novel, The Resurrection of Nat Turner, Part 1: The Witnesses. During this event—that is co-presented with the Northwest African American Musuem—Foster’s intricate story-telling skills will illustrate the complicated relationships between slaves and slave owners in the old South. Foster has written numerous bestselling novels, and has received a Christy Award and the NAACP Book of the Year Award.

Monday, 7 p.m. // Northwest African American Museum // Free

Mark Auslander at University of Washington Book Store:
The Café Fireside at University Book Store hosts an evening with Mark Auslander, author of The Accidental Slaveowner: Revisiting a Myth of Race and Finding an American Family. His book takes two perspectives on one situation in a small town—as seen through the eyes of local whites, and then of local African Americans. These different views create the dialogue for Mark Auslander to discuss race relations, and how we came to be where we are now.

Peter Sís at Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Public Library:
This is an evening with author and illustrator Peter Sís—and with his new book, The Conference of the Birds. Though best known for winning the New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year award seven times, his latest venture seems equally captivating. Conference is an illustrated take on Fariduddin’s Sufi fable about the human journey. And that’s something that pretty much all of us have some interest in!

Tuesday, 7 p.m. // Microsoft Auditorium, Seattle Public Central Library // Free

Peter Bagge at Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery:
A book signing at Fantagraphics! I love these—and even more exciting that it’s Peter Bagge, an artist known for his bold and witty style. Bagge will be swinging by the store to sign copies of his Hate comix anthologies (which essentially show the ins and outs of that 90s lifestyle)—along with more recent work. And to top it off—the band Can You Imagine, featuring some talented ladies (Michelle, Rachel and Sue), along with Bagge and the celebrated Steve Fisk, will be performing next door at The MIX after.

Friday, 7 p.m. // Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery // Free
