Can't Miss It: Thursday

sharon_jones_hard_way.jpg NIGHT LIGHTS: If anyone calls you a witch,/burn for him; if anyone calls you/less or more than you are/let him burn for you./It’s a dangerous mission. You/could die out there. You/could live forever. This is an excerpt from Tess Gallagher’s poem “Instructions to the Double,” first published in 1976 and included in Midnight Lantern, a retrospective released this year. A Port Angeles native and UW alumnus, Gallagher returns to Washington for a reading from her new release that also includes 30 new poems. Her works include 12 poetry books, 3 fiction books, 2 essay collections, and a published conversation with Buddhist nun Jakucho Setouchi. She was also married to fellow Washingtonian Raymond Carver.

LIVING LIVE: Soul/funk group Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have been on a roll since their first record dropped in 2002. After 4 celebrated albums and a number of high-profile collaborations and TV appearances, the group’s best trait remains its unparalleled live show, honed by seemingly ceaseless touring. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings do more than just recall the soul and gospel sounds of 60s Stax and Motown, they add to the tradition and prove that analog can still trump digital, especially on the live stage.

TOTALLY. ALMOST: Shakespeare (maybe) wrote a lot. In fact, he probably wrote too much. He probably didn’t have time for his friends, who liked to surf. They were probably like, “C’mon Shakes, chillax. Hang loose. You’re not being tubular.” At least that’s what they would have said if they were the three dudes in The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged). In this madcap recap play, co-produced by Stone Soup Theatre and Sound Theatre Company, three surfer types speed through Shakespeare’s works.
