Last year, the Seattle Art Museum pulled off quite the coup when they were named as the first of three American museums to host the touring blockbuster Picasso exhibition. This year, they've done one better: Seattle will be the only American stop for an upcoming exhibition featuring the work of French artist Paul Gauguin.

Gauguin and Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise, which will open at SAM on February 9 and run through the end of April, presents 50 of the artist's works alongside 60 significant sculptures from traditional Polynesian culture and will shine a light on one of Gauguin's most-recognized periods of artistic production.

For art fans, this will be one of the must-see museum exhibitions of 2012. But, we're also drawn to the idea that a burst of Tahitian-inspired color might be a perfect cure for rainy Seattle winters.

Tickets are already on sale, and if the Picasso exhibit is any sort of example, you might want to consider picking some up before the lines get too long.
