Lots of events this week! Here are just a few...

Sandra Spanier at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
Ernest Hemingway has long been a fascinating character in the literary world, and this evening Sandra Spanier makes things a bit more personal with an impressive compilation of Ernest Hemingway’s collected correspondence. Whether you’re a scholar or a fan, The Letters of Ernest Hemingway: Volume 1, 1907—1922 will paint a vivid portrait of the writer as a talented young man.

Monday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Co. // Free

Jaclyn Friedman and Heather Corinna at Elliott Bay Book Co.:
Nothing wrong with a little conversation about sex—especially when it’s being led by writer/media activist Jaclyn Friedman and Heather Corinna, author of S.E.X. The All-You-Need-to-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and College! Add an inquisitive, wild audience, and you’re bound to have a fun (yet informative) evening. Jaclyn Friedman wrote What You Really Really Want: The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex and Safety—and the discussion will most likely focus on developing a healthy personal sexuality—and all those questions that people generally shy away from asking. Enjoy!

Tuesday, 7 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Co. // Free

John Carlos with Dave Zirin at the Northwest African American Museum:
This is an evening presented by the Central District Forum For Arts and Ideas—an evening focusing on the life of John Carlos. From that infamous photograph of him giving the Black Power salute on the awards podium at the 1968 Olympics, to a life dedicated to social justice. His story, The John Carlos Story was co-authored by sports journalist Dave Zirin, and both will be in attendance this evening for the reading and dicussion!

Thursday, 7 p.m. // Northwest African American Museum // $10/$8 students, www.brownpapertickets.com

Cheap Beer and Prose at Richard Hugo House:
Steve Barker, Corbin Lewars, Anne Leigh Parrish, Michael Shilling AND $1 cans of PBR! This evening is hosted by Charla Grenz, and between trips to the bar for your cheap as hell cans of brew—enjoy the prose stylings of some talented individuals. Steve Barker will be there, (part of the brains behind the cheap lit and booze mania), as well as Corbin Lewars, author of Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making. Anne Leigh Parrish, who wrote the story collection, All the Roads That Lead From Home is in the line up, as is Michael Shilling, author of Rock Bottom.

Thursday, 7 p.m. // Richard Hugo House // Free

Alice Bag at Elliott Bay Book Co. and Pony:
A cultural icon for ladies and L.A. punk, Alice Armendariz (aka Alice Bag) stops into Elliott Bay to share her complicated story in her memoir, Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage: A Chicana Punk Story. With a past strongly rooted in bands like the Bags and the Alice Bag Band—Alice is now a celebrated teacher, activist and writer. Check out her reading and performance this evening—and her appearance at Pony at 10 p.m. (if you want a little more booze with your reading).
