3 Reasons To Check Out The Uptown
Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary
Last week we gave you the heads up on the re-opening of the Uptown - which is now officially dubbed SIFF Cinema at the Uptown. If the red carpet, Klieg lights and local celebrities were not enough to get you off the sofa and down to lower Queen Anne, here are three more reasons (plus a bonus) why the Uptown should be in your future plans.
Abigail Breslin: It seems a lot longer than five years ago, but if you happened to duck into a movie theater anytime in 2006 you couldn't escape the Indie darling Little Miss Sunshine. Getting her big screen debut in this "little sleeper" hit, which eventually took in more than $100 million worldwide, was Abigail Breslin - who played the young girl in the Hoover family traveling across the country in a broken-down VW bus, in order to compete in the titular beauty pageant.
Five years later Breslin is still traveling cross country on a bus. This time the bus is a little bigger but troubles still follow. In Janie Jones, Bresiln plays a leading role of a 13-year old daughter of an irresponsible rock star and a mother who turns to methamphetamines for comfort. It may sound like a downer, but if you stick with it until the end you'll be rewarded with a heartwarming little flick. The film won't do boffo numbers at the box office - but it's filled with nuanced performances to enjoy along the way.
Gonzo Depp Redux: Up to now, when some people thought of SIFF they typically imagined long, foreign films usually shot in black & white. Although that was never a true characterization - now that SIFF has brought the Uptown back to life more people may look at them in a different light.
With a new 500 seat theater SIFF can bring in the big boys now and again to entertain the masses. This week Johnny Depp takes a turn at the Uptown with his new Hunter Thompson-esque The Rum Diary. This time he loses the eye patch is but the attitude is still larger than life.
Tucker & Dale: Not technically a seasonal flick, but then again, nothing says "Halloween" like scary psychopaths, murders and a movie description which includes the term ‘chainsaw wielding killers.’ Of course, all of this comes wrapped in a package that promises plenty of laughs as the comedy favorite Tucker & Dale vs. Evil rolls into the Uptown just in time for some tricks after your treats.
Bonus: If you are a fan of theater, London and food then you'll not want to miss the special screening of National Theatre: The Kitchen LIVE. Seattlest's own Jenise has the details over here.
Check out SIFF Cinema for showtimes.
