SCCC: Law "Allows This Occupation" To Happen

The SLOG reports that the Seattle Central Community College administration, after consulting with its lawyers, has determined that a state code actually allows for the Occupy Seattle protest to move to its campus -- though in the letter from SCCC's president that announces this development, it is clear that the organization is far from thrilled at the prospect.

With this announcement, the way is clear for Occupy Seattle's planned move away from Westlake Center's plaza and onto the college campus that's slated to take place later tonight, though the loose organization will have to live up to the several promises it gave to the SCCC president in order for its stay to remain reluctantly welcome. These include the rental and maintenance of several port-a-potties, and a policing of both its grounds and its group for potentially illegal activities.

As the president's letter states, "we will be monitoring the situation closely." (Read the full letter at the SLOG.)

The local occupation would be wise to behave as if all media will be doing the same; as the national media spotlight shifts to other burgeoning regional movements, Seattle media has gotten used to the novelty of Occupy Seattle's jumbled message and have become leery of the less than focused and more uncouth aspects of its populace. SCCC has just granted them something of a clean slate, so re-focusing to their core principles would be welcome.
