In Case You Missed It: National Food Day Festivities Still in Full Swing

If you were otherwise engaged on Monday, you may not have known that, aside from being the 24th day of the month, it was also National Food Day. And while every day is kind of National Food Day (in that we are humans and, if we are very fortunate, eat every day), actual National Food Day. The nationwide initiative, which has turned into more of a Food Week, was designed to encourage Americans to demand sustainability, support for farmers, a push toward real, healthy food, and equal access to food for all. The actual day was on Monday, but don't worry--there are still plenty of ways to get involved.

For example, recent Federal grant winner Seattle Tilth is screening the locally-produced documentary, The Greenhorns in the chapel at the Good Shepherd Center, (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N.) tonight at 7:00 p.m. The film follows a youth-oriented farming community, as it recruits and trains young people on the fine art of growing.

If documentary film isn't exactly your cup of tea, opt for a deep discussion, instead. Head over to the Douglass-Truth Library to discuss one of the biggest pieces of food-related legislature, the 2012 Farm Bill. The discussion is hosted by the Central Coop, and starts at 6:30 p.m.

To wrap up the festivities tomorrow go 'all in' by attending the Farm Conference with keynotes by local cheflebrities Tamara Murphy and Graham Kerr. You can find more details on that here.

Or, you can spend the evening with the UW Nutrition Sciences Program as they host a symposium on nutrition, food access and food justice at the Parrington Hall Commons. The event is free, and features talks and discussions from 12:30 until 5:00 p.m.

And if your schedule doesn't permit you to attend any of these events (sad!), why not cultivate some winter greens to share with friends and neighbors on your own time? It's easier than you might think--and if you need gardening advice, there are plenty of experts in the community to help make every day Food Day.
