Weekend Sports Roundup: Mix of Emotions Edition
Shame: Maybe the Browns will let us borrow some paper bags to put over our heads, because yesterday's game was just flat out embarrassing. Not only was Tavaris Jackson out with an injury, it seemed that Charlie Whitehurst and Colt McCoy both took the day off as well. The final score was 6-3. How do you play four quarters of football and only walk away with three field goals between you? Well, start with having your running back injured in pre-game warmups. Now that your run game is officially out of the question, have your backup quarterback come in and throw for 97 yards. Tack on a heavy dose of penalties, including one that calls back an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown, and you get the idea. It was an ugly game from start to finish, leaving the Seahawks, deservedly, at 2-4.
Next Up: The Bengals come to town.
Ready for the Playoffs: The Sounders didn't even need to score to take an early lead in Saturday's regular season finale. Chivas USA scored an own goal in the beginning minutes of the second half to put the Sounders up 1-0. Goals from Alvaro Fernandez and hot-footed Sammy Ochoa followed to cement the win for Seattle and a late game goal from Chivas was enough to prevent a shutout, but not much else. The 3-1 win was a good way to end the season, but an injury to star player Mauro Rosales is reason for concern. No word yet on whether or not he will be ready to suit up for the playoffs next weekend.
Next Up: Game One in the Western Conference Semifinals on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
Fall from the Top: The Washington Huskies had an all too brief stay in the national top 25 rankings. After Saturday's trouncing at the hands of Stanford, it was made pretty clear that the Huskies were a little out of their league. Combine the fact that UW scored a season-low number of points with a season-high number of points from an opponent, and you get the 65-21 outcome we saw on Saturday. It wasn't all bad, things didn't really start to get out of hand until late in the second quarter. For the majority of the first half, UW hung with Stanford and their Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck, Chris Polk in particular was able to find lanes to run for 46- and 61-yard scores. However, when the Huskies' offensive machine finally ran out of steam, the weaknesses of the defense just couldn't contain Stanford.
Next Up: At the risk of underestimating an opponent, it should be an easy one at home against Arizona.
