The book is "an enlightening and inspiring guide to changing not only what we eat, but how food is grown, packaged, delivered, marketed, and sold." PART TWO: Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies is the first in a trilogy that tells the story of the voyage of the Ibis, a ship transporting Indian girmitiyas (coolies) to Mauritius in 1838. It has been called a mashup of diaspora, myth, and language all within a "Rubik's cube of plots." Sea of Poppies had no problem at all shooting to the top of the best-sellers list and winning some awards along the way and the highly-anticipated second installment, River of Smoke was just released. River of Smoke follows the Ibis ship's storm-tossed characters to the crowded harbors of China. Ghosh will be reading from the new book tonight at Town Hall.

SLAMMIN': Each Tuesday night at Re-Bar the Seattle Poetry Slam hosts an evening jam packed with word-y goodness. Here's how the night goes: 8:30 pm starts the open mic portion, then a featured poet takes the stage at 9 pm (tonight the featured poet is Eliel Lucero) and at 10 pm the poetry war also known as the "slam" begins. The rules for the slam are simple: 1. Poets must perform their own original work; 2. No props, costumes or musical accompaniment; and 3. Poets have three minutes to perform their piece. Each poet earns a score awarded by randomly-picked judges from the audience. The winning poets get prizes and a chance at representing Seattle on the national and international level. Prepare yourself for a battle royale of words and poems and thoughts and feelings.
