Weekend Sports Roundup: Back in the Polls Edition
Plenty of Points: The University of Washington defeated PAC-12 newcomers Colorado over the weekend. The Huskies' offense showed once again that they have no trouble putting points on the board -- 52 to be precise -- while the defense showed that they haven't quite mastered that whole "stopping the other team from scoring" thing just yet. But, it doesn't matter because UW's offense just keeps scoring touchdowns. The 52-24 win puts UW at 5-1 on the season and undefeated in conference play. It also puts them...
Back in the Polls: For the first time since 2009, the Huskies are back in the national rankings. Coming in at No. 22 in the AP poll and at No. 24 in the USA Today coaches' poll, UW's efforts have clearly not gone unnoticed by the rest of the country. They will have to be careful though, a loss to Stanford on Saturday could be all it takes to drop out of the Top 25.
Come From Behind: In honor of legendary goal keeper Kasey Keller's final regular season home game, the Sounders made sure to mark the occasion with a win. The win was far from certain though. A goal by San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski about 25 minutes into the first half put the visitors up 1-0, a score that remained well into the second half. Sammy Ochoa tied it up on a Mauro Rosales assist in the 82nd minute, and Freddy Montero scored in the game's final minutes to make it a 2-1 win for the Sounders. The Sounders have a Champion's League game against Monterrey on Tuesday before squaring off against Chivas USA for their final regular season MLS game on Saturday.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the sports world...
- The World Series is set. The St. Louis Cardinals and their Rally Squirrels will face off against the Texas Rangers for this year's title.
- Speaking of world baseball events, the Netherlands upset Cuba in the Baseball World Cup finals on Saturday. The 2-1 win made the Netherlands the first European team to take the title since the Brits in 1938.
- And then there was one. The Green Bay Packers are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL.
- In truly sad news, two time Indy 500-winner Dan Wheldon died following a horrific 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
