SPD Evicting Westlake Occupation Protestors
As was predicted on Saturday, as the Occupy Seattle movement set up their tents for the evening after the local movement's most successful day of protests to date, the city and the Seattle Police Department were going to bide their time before going in to roust everyone out, preferably at a time when the movement was weak, and the area would see a lesser amount of sympathetic eyeballs. Apparently, that time was Monday morning.
This morning, Monday commuters were greeted with the sight of the Seattle Police Department tearing down any and all tents that were found at the downtown park, and arresting anyone who resisted against being moved. The Slog, along with the Seattle Times, have reported that eight protesters have been arrested so far, but that number is likely to rise as the day progresses. As this is being written, the SPD has raised a barricade, and are about to sweep through the park in an effort to clear Westlake Center, which has served as the much disputed home of the Occupy Seattle movement.
For his part, Mayor Mike McGinn took to Twitter to deliver his latest message, mainly reiterating that the grounds at City Hall remain open for the protestors to move into; in return, the protestors have pledged to commit further resistance and intend to stay at the park.
While Saturday served as a strong rallying point and confirmation of the movement's validity, today is when the group's loyalty and perseverance will be tested
More as it develops.
