Can't Miss It: Monday

Beetlejuice_poster.jpg Otho & The Handbook of the Recently Deceased: Think back to 1988, assuming you were born; a time when Michael Keaton's star was rising, and the phrase "directed by Tim Burton" stood for an actual aesthetic, instead of a handful of mannerisms. All of that would change not long after these two artists worked together on Beetlejuice -- the movie that secured Keaton's place as a celebrity for the next decade, and put Burton on the short list to direct Batman, which absolutely killed the momentum of his career before it even began. A sweetly daffy and macabre film that's playing tonight at the Central Cinema, most of Beetlejuice's charm comes from lead comedic performances by Geena Davis and Alex Baldwin, something neither of them were known for. Combine that with Danny Elfman's then-fresh bouncy score, and some well timed Harry Belafonte intrusions and what's not to like?

Tonight at 7:00p.m., 9:30p.m. // Central Cinema, 1411 21st Avenue // $6

Bride of Collide-o-Scope: If you like your Halloween macabre with less "sweet" and "daffy" and more "deconstructed" and "dangerous", then head down to Re-bar, where Collide-o-Scope makes its monthly return with its Halloween Spooktacular. The event will feature their usual mix of madcap and zany video footage, likely mingled with some of the more depraved and disturbing imagery in their vaults. All that, plus free Red Vines and prizes galore!

Tonight at 8:00p.m., doors open at 7:00p.m. // Re-bar, 1114 Howell Street // $10
