Seattlest's Favorite Things

Without Oprah to tell us what to like and buy, the Seattlest Staffers were feeling a little lost. So we've polled each other and come up with the stuff that we can't get enough of this week, from places to go and things to do, to the little tidbits that make our life better on the daily. Here's what we've got this week:

The Gold Guy across from Occupy Seattle: The last two plus weeks have been filled with a lot of heartache, skepticism, media coverage (both bad and good), and late nights/early mornings for some of us. On most of our minds has been one thing: Occupy Seattle. While we've been continue our normal routines (for the most part) of getting up, having our coffee, going to work, drinking beer, running around town, feeding our pets, etc. we've also been preoccupied with the occupation. But, amongst all the chaos, I managed to stumble upon this guy yesterday, and you know what? He made me smile. I don't care if you think painted statue people (mimes? buskers? Whatever you wanna call them) are freaks, weirdos, alcoholics without jobs, or just plain irritating. One thing can be said that he certainly creates a dichotomy. And dude, he has a super sweet helmet and gun. Who knows, maybe he's really a super hero just waiting for his moment. Regardless of all this, he too is part of the 99%.

Good Belly: For making me feel human.

Fungi: Like most people, I hated 'shrooms as a kid. But I'm all grown up now and I think mushrooms rule! Not in the way that some feel (there are folks who espouse that they are one of the pillars of national security-really!) but they truly do enhance my life on a pretty regular basis. I love them fresh and dried from Foraged & Found at the area farmers markets and I still get giddy every time I grow them using spores I've bought online at Fungi Perfecti in my garden or with kids using the uber easy oyster mushroom kits from Back to the Roots. But as satisfying as growing and eating the fungi is, learning about it from shroom geeks at The Wild Mushroom Show is even better--and you are in luck, because it's this weekend.

The Sounders: Without the Seattle Sounders, there would be no Seahawks and no Mariners. The Sounders convinced everyone that the King County Multi-Purposed Domed Stadium was viable with three major sports to host and opened the way for the Hawks and Mariners to enter their leagues two years later. The very first sporting event ever in the 'Dome was a Sounders match against the hated New York Cosmos and some Pelé guy with 58,000 people.

Saturday's game will mark the last home game for local legend Kasey Keller, the guy who has a street named after him. I played against Kasey regularly years ago in youth soccer, and have always respected and admired him (honor among goalkeepers). 60,000+ other fans will be there to rock the Xbox Pitch and celebrate his storied career as captain of the only Major League Soccer team to win the US Open Cup three times.

Keller=Stud. Sounders=Legend.

Look, even these trees have sweater tights on. Sweater-o-rama by Miss Q Pix from the Seattlest Flickr pool.
Sweater tights: I love regular tights because shaving your legs in the winter is bogus. I love sweater tights because they are just as cute, but are like sweaters for your legs. Today was the first day that I was able to wear my sweater tights outside, and I am delighted.

The Cinerama: There’s no denying that Seattle’s Cinerama theatre is one of the best places to catch a flick. Whether it’s the latest box office blockbuster, festival event or an archival print of a classic film from the 70’s - like A Space Oddesy 2001 - there’s nothing quite like settling into the (newly refurbished) brilliant red seats and catching a glimpse of the star-like lights overhead that illuminate the theater before the movie hits the screen. Add their customer friendly concessions into the mix and you’re set for a movie experience unrivaled in this town. Make sure not to miss the closing weekend of their 70mm Big Screen Film Festival, which I recommended last month, and get a rare glimpse of the few films that were shot in true three-strip Cinerama format. Also make a plan to be at Cinerama on Sunday, October 23 for the closing night of the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. The flick, Vito, is a compelling and important look back at Vito Russo who championed and led the gay liberation movement in the 70’s.

Feminist Ryan Gosling: As a feminist theory geek--yes, we exist-- laughing hard over this Tumblr.

I Love Splatter: Halloween is a time for horror movies. A good amount of horror movies regularly feature the viscous goo that our bodies are made of; therefore, a fan of horror movies is bound to like gore. This is where I Love Splatter comes in; the blog's author is clearly a fan of the genre, and every October she builds up to Halloween by discussing a horror film a day, dissecting them for their squirm inducing factor and volume of viscera. It's a fun read; I may disagree with her take on Michael Haneke's Funny Games, but at last I've found someone who appreciates Freddy v. Jason the way I do. Besides, who else is going to warn you to stay away from the third Ginger Snaps movie?
