Weekend Sports Roundup: Trading Places Edition
Quarterback Quandary: For those of you who thought the debate about who should be the Seahawks' starting quarterback died when the preseason ended, guess again. Tavaris Jackson had a good game, completing 15/22 for 166 yards, it was arguably one of the best he's had in a Seattle uniform. Then he got injured and Charlie Whitehurst took over. Whitehurst, who has been some fans preferred choice to start, had a good game too: 11/19, 149 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions compared to Jackson's one. If Jackson is still injured next week, Whitehurst will get the start and possibly muddle the quarterback question even further.
Felling Giants: As for the rest of the Seahawks, they are busy celebrating Sunday's big win over the New York Giants. There were lots of positives in the 36-25 outcome: Marshawn Lynch seemed to gain more in the ground game (98 yards this week compared to last weekend's 24), the rookies made huge plays including a touchdown catch for Doug Baldwin and Brandon Browner's 94-yard interception returned for a touchdown, and the defense showed real strength, particularly in the third quarter.
Next Up: A bye week.
Shut Out: The Seahawks weren't the only team facing a reversal of fortune this weekend. The consistently strong Sounders lost to the Philadelphia Union Saturday 2-0, their first shut out since early August of this year. There were opportunities for Seattle, including a Brad Evans shot on goal early in the second half that hit the post instead of the net, but the Sounders just couldn't get it together. Still solidly in second place in the Western Conference, the Sounders have just two MLS games left in the regular season.
Next Up: Friday at home vs. San Jose.
