Don't Show Your Support of #OccupySeattle By Honking After Dark

Occupyseattle13.jpg If you're unable to join in the Occupy Seattle protests, but find yourself driving by Westlake Center after dark, you'll want to think twice before deciding to honk to show your support.

@OccupySeattle is warning drivers that the Seattle Police Department has taken to ticketing drivers who honk in support of the protest after 10:00p.m., which strikes us at Seattlest as a bit beyond the pale. The specificity of the time suggests that the SPD is using some noise ordinance law in order to harass people who show support of the movement -- it's egregious, no matter the rationale.

In the interest of fairness, KIRO News does say that it is unclear whether the SPD was giving out warning citations instead of tickets, which feels like an equivocation for what is clearly intimidation tactics used to demoralize the protesters. Granted, it is a milder form of police intimidation, but it is intimidation nonetheless.

In any scenario, consider yourself warned.

Technically, it's illegal to sound your horn for any non-emergency purpose on any road or alley in King and Pierce counties, and statewide on freeways and highways.  It's just one of those things that no one ever gets ticketed for.
