Go West!: Carmageddon, Whale Tail Ale and Amanda Knox's Homecoming

We love our West Seattle neighbors, and thought they deserved more attention. Every Friday, we'll post the week's happenings in Seattle's island town.

This Week In West Seattle, These Things Happened:

  • West Seattle residents told KIRO how they feel about Amanda Knox's return.

  • "The Hole" -- the big ol' vacant pit at 3922 SW Alaska -- was sold for $32 million at a forclosure auction to a development company.

  • A local teacher says she witnessed a hazing on Friday night in Solstice Park.

  • The Seattle Fire Department pulled a woman from the water just off Beach Drive on Wednesday. She was treated at Harborview for hypothermia.

  • West Seattle cohousing community Puget Ridge was profiled in the Times.

  • Highline Medical Urgent Care opened on Monday on 41st Avenue SW.

  • West Seattle photographer Machel Spence has a new book out!

  • West Seattle Blog has video of Roxhill Elementary's recording session with Rhymesayers artist Psalm One!

  • MSNBC profiled Occupy Seattle participants -- including 70-year old Carol Spane and 86-year-old Patricia Barclay from West Seattle. Spane said, ""Protests are important and people need to stand up for what they believe in — even if they are as old as we are."

  • A local man broke his foot on the West Seattle Segway tour he bought with a Groupon.

  • Two public elementary schools, Boren and Hughes, may reopen, but their location is unpopular among those who attended last night's public meeting.

  • Coming Up:

    • Changes to RapidRide on Avalon Way start October 10.

    • Also on October 10, Pathfinder Elementary is showing their "Don't Feed the Tox-Ick Monster" presentation -- and if 40 or more adults show up, they'll win a $1,000 grant from Sustainable West Seattle toward a rainwater harvesting system for their Earth Project. (FREE PIZZA.)

    • REMEMBER THAT THE VIADUCT IS CLOSING ON OCTOBER 21. There will be limited low bridge openings. If you would like to yell about it provide your input in a calm, rational manner, two of those open houses we mentioned this morning are happening in West Seattle. (In the words of Dennis, Charlie and Mac on last night's It's Always Sunny: "Reason will prevail!")

    • Big Al, in partnership with Feedback Lounge, is launching Whale Tail Ale November 9 at a variety of West Seattle venues. If anyone from outside West Seattle wants it, they "have to come across the bridge to get it."
