Can't Miss It: Thursday
BODY MOVIN: Prepare to say, “I didn’t know people could bend that way.” Also, “Huh?” “What’s going on?” and “Oh. Cool.” Pilobolus dance company is back in town as part of the UW World Series. These cats will literally crawl up the walls and crawl upon each other to turn movement into art. No form is off limits as Pilobolus dancers shift shapes, flex and flow to music, becoming multi-limbed, strange new beings. Imagine the trippiness of a Tool music video - if Tool were more concerned with creating human poetry than creating whatever it was they did. Not that it’s all WTF and no play. Check out this video the group directed with OK Go.
8:00 p.m. // Meany Hall // $48
FULL MOON: LUNA’s doing a good thing with its traveling short film festival, Lunafest. The event not only highlights the work of women in film, all net proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Fund. Hosts also raise money for local nonprofits; Seattle’s event benefits Reel Grrls. The night starts with free food, wine, music from Holly Newsom, a photobooth, live painting, etc. before moving to SIFF Cinema for the film screening and a Q&A with filmmaker Shideh Faramand. Film info and event trailer here.
6:00 p.m. // SIFF Cinema / McCaw Hall 321 Mercer St // $15 - $25
DRINK, PRAY, LEAVE: Seattle writer Suzanne Morrison celebrates the release of her memoir Yoga Bitch at Richard Hugo House with the help of fellow writers Nicole Hardy and Tina Rowley. The book chronicles Morrison’s mid-20s adventure to Bali where she hoped to reshape her atheistic, cigarette and wine laden life by becoming a spiritual yogi. Things, thankfully, don’t go according to plan as Morrison finds herself at odds with certain beliefs and practices - say, drinking your own urine every morning. All is not lost, though, as Morrison comes away rich with perspective and entertaining (and well-told) anecdotes. Morrison was good enough to speak with us. Read our interview here.
