Apple Update: No iPhone 5... AGAIN

Oh, Apple. You always have to keep up guessing.

First, there was the mystery of the shuttered U. Village store. Then, there was today's not surprising, but still disappointing announcement: no iPhone 5 for you.

We (and everyone else who's at all interested in technology/doesn't hate Apple for some reason) have been anticipating the iPhone 5 for some time. Mostly becuase we've been stuck with the 3Gs (or for some others, the 3G) for way too long. It's got scratches, dents and battery life sucks. Though, it's tough to put down a working phone for something that costs more than half a month's rent. We know. First World problems. White whine. We know.

Regardless, we can't help but feel that it's time to be out with the old and in with the new.

Today was rumored to possibly be the day (though there were still plenty of skeptical folks), and we were excitedly anticipating the live stream of all the new gadgets and what's in store for the iPhone 5. Then, we hit a brick wall when we found out that they decided to nix the live stream of the announcement event this year.

LAME.

Well, luckily there are a lot of tech sites out there with invites to Cupertino where the unveiling is held. They are nice enough (and smart enough) to live blog the entire thing. It started at around 10am PST and we've been refreshing our browsers like mad to see what's going on.

As of 11:30am all the announcements had mainly been about how wonderful Apple is and how many people have used iTunes or bought the new OS Lion. Blah blah blah, we already know how much power they have over us, just get to the good stuff already! They finally get to the iPhone 4s. Apparently it's got an all new A5 processor in it, the camera has been upgraded to 8 megapixels and even has an fstop of 2.4. Not bad... not bad at all.

Then came the big news that Apple is using as their main selling point--Siri. It's a voice control system, but what it really amounts to is an AI system--not kidding. It's sort of insane to be honest with you. From what we've read (thanks to Engadget.com) you can do almost anything via voice control that the iPhone is capable of doing via touch control at this time. It will respond to text messages for you by voice after remembering whom the text it just read to you was from. It'll let you hear your calendar events and then add an event for you or respond to an event request by hearing "yes" from its master. There are so many different things this new software can do, we can't even fathom. It's a little creepy but so awesome it boggles the mind at the SAME TIME.

However we continued to anticipate the words we've been waiting to hear "iPhone 5", but it never came. That's right folks, iPhone 5 still isn't ready. According to Engadget (time shown is EST) "2:38PM Sorry folks, no iPhone 5... yet...." Fantastic. The real question is why did they call this new version of the phone 4s instead of 5? Seattlest thinks: Just to f**k with us. There you have it folks, a new exciting iPhone but still followed by the number 4.
