Go West!: Cars, Bikes, Cars vs. Bikes, and Settlers of Catan

Every Friday afternoon, we post a roundup of the week's news from West Seattle.

What Happened This Week:

  • No shit: A bunch of people report that West Seattle will be most affected by the Viaduct closure.

  • The West Seattle Junction Car Show went well, had lots of pretty cars.

  • In crime: notorious West Seattle lawbreaker Ryan Cox in jail again on a $25,000 bail.

  • Fires! A house fire Tuesday afternoon on Boyd Place SW was caused by paint rags. There was also a small fire at staple Junction business JF Henry and Company on Saturday, but they will operate as usual despite an estimated $10,000 in damage.

  • A wildlife raft was relaunched by the Alki Lighthouse on Tuesday. Seal Sitters applaud.

  • Garlic Jim's Pizza quietly and clandestinely closed around a week ago.

  • The 1994 murder of two West Seattle teens may be solved soon.

  • As usual, stuff was stolen. Keep an eye out for this car and this kayak. A couple of sharp commenters may have spotted the latter on 35th Avenue SW and SW Hudson.

  • California Avenue SW now sports a big yellow pencil, which serves as signage for Potter Construction.

  • In bikes: the Village Bicycle Project is seeking bikes and volunteers. Meanwhile, a heated discussion on the "war on bikes/war on cars" rages on a post about a commuting incident between a bike and a truck.

Coming Up:

  • September 25: A new group focusing on "strategy board games" (e.g. Settlers of Catan, Dominion) meets at Uptown Espresso on SW Edmunds at 1 p.m.

  • September 25 through November 7: The public comment period for some proposed new sewer features.

  • October 2: The deadline for the Hi-Yu scholarship program.

  • End of October: Local confectionary Stuffed Cakes is moving to 35th Avenue SW.
