Can't Miss It: Tuesday

Can you believe it's been 20 years? Sorry for making you feel old. Image source.

TRIVIA TUESDAY: Head down to Tonight Zayda Buddy's in Ballard tonight for Northwest-themed trivia night, good beer, and cheap bites. And just in case that didn't sell you, the entry fee and raffle proceeds go to Conservation Northwest ("to protect and connect old-growth forests and other wild areas from the Washington Coast to the BC Rockies: vital to a healthy future for us, our children, and wildlife"). Here's how it goes: Step one: Go to Zayda Buddy's. Step two: Answer some questions about Nirvana and rain and maybe coffee. Step three: Save Mother Nature. Oh, one last thing, there will be prizes!

'NEVERMIND' TURNS 20: Have you heard that Nirvana's Nevermind is turning 20 this year? Well, you really should have because it's kind of a big deal and the EMP is throwing lots and lots of parties to celebrate. Tonight is the big kick-off and EMP is hosting two events in honor of Nevermind's milestone birthday. The first is a benefit show for longtime Seattle music industry maven (and all-around awesome person) Susie Tennant, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Different Seattle groups will be performing the seminal album in its entirety. Too bad the benefit show is already sold out. Which means that you'll just have to make do with part two of the celebratory activities: a panel discussion with Mark Kates, Director of Alternative Promotions for DGC, and Marco Collins, original Music Director/On Air Host at 107.7 The End. And remember: as Seattleites, attendance is compulsory.

6:30 pm // EMP // $5 - $8

ALSO 20:If you were always more of a Pearl Jam guy than a Nirvana guy, skip the EMP and head to Cinerama, instead, which will be celebrating the 20th birthday of the band that refuses to quit. Pearl Jam 20, a personal project of Cameron Crowe, will air on PBS in October--but first, it's getting a special showing, just for folks in Seattle. Unfortunately, tonight's 7:30 p.m. showing is DEFINITELY sold out, so call for tickets to the 10:30 one ASAP.

NOT 20, BUT STILL INTERESTING: Or, you could skip the whole celebration of grunge and do what the rest of Seattle does: get extremely informed on wonky matters, like the re-districting of our state! As you probably know, Washington's congressional lines are getting re-drawn: meaning you might have a new congressperson to send angry letters to soon. Come to Washington Hall tonight for a showing of Gerrymandering, a documentary about re-districting, and how it can help (or hurt) diversity in communities, and ensure (or entirely erase) equal representation on measures that matter. There will even be a Q&A afterward.

JEOPARDY MASTER: You remember Ken Jennings, right? The Pacific Northwest native who, in 2004, set a record for consecutive Jeopardy! wins that will probably outlast the pyramids. Well, he is back and proving to us once again that he knows way more stuff than just about any other human being. His book, Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks, details his obsession with maps and geography. At the reading tonight, expect to hear stories about the map-illiteracy crisis; high-dollar map dealers; the Library of Congress' Geography and Map Division and its 8,500 cabinets of maps; "road geeks" who can tell you everything you'd ever want to know about the U.S. Interstate system; and the Google Earth project and its ultimate goal: visually cataloging the planet's entire surface on the scale 1 square centimeter = 1 pixel.
