Labor Day weekend was an exciting one for sports around the country. Here is some of what you might have missed...

  • College football kicked off their season with some good games and some of the ugliest uniforms ever known to man. Maryland, seriously?

  • The U.S. Open tennis tournament is underway in New York and there are still three American hopefuls on the men's side, while Serena Williams is the lone U.S. contender on the women's side.

  • With less than a week to go before the NFL season commences, football fanatics were finalizing their fantasy draft picks. We're sure Peyton Manning's neck injury caused some issues.

  • Some baseball teams are whittling down their magic numbers to secure berths in October's playoffs. The rest just appear to be losing.
  • In our neck of the woods, athletic endeavors were full of nail-biters and resounding defeats.

Huskies: After a last-second win over Eastern Washington on Saturday, two Huskies were named PAC-12 Players of the Week. Third-year cornerback Desmond Trufant came up with a crucial interception in Saturday's game, while kicker Erik Folk sent three out of three through the uprights.

Mariners: Five seems to be a popular number with the Mariners. On September 5th, they had five errors and dropped their fifth straight game. Their current losing streak started Thursday with a 4-3 loss to the Angels. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the Ms were in Oakland and were treated to a series sweep before heading down to L.A. for yesterday's defeat. What is the magic number for the Ms to make the playoffs? Nothing shy of impossible.

Seahawks: It's been a difficult preseason for the Seahawks, but they ended it on a good note. Friday night they hosted the Raiders, whose recently acquired quarterback Terrelle Pryor handled clipboard duty, and won convincingly, albeit with minimal flash, 20-3. In the battle for who is the least worst quarterback, named starter Tavaris Jackson threw for 88 yards in 5 out of 7 passes during his one quarter of play. He also had one interception. Charlie Whitehurst played the remaining three quarters with a 9/15 completion rate and 140 yards. Neither QB threw a touchdown.

Storm: Sue Bird was the leading scorer for the Storm in both games over the weekend. In a mini Southwest road trip, the Storm topped Tulsa on Friday and sank San Antonio on Saturday. Seattle, though six games back from the Minnesota Lynx in the Western Division, have already clinched a playoff berth.
