Tweeter of the Week: @WTA_hikers
From now until I forget to do it, I'm going to highlight my favorite local Tweeter. Think of it like #FollowFriday, but less about getting followers for myself, and more about exposing Twitter accounts that are notable, humorous or informative--and always under 140 characters.
September may mean "back to school" for many, but in Seattle it means "the best weather we're going to have all year is here, so get yourself outside." But without a tourism council to lay down the best trails and hikes around, even locals (especially the newly-minted ones) can feel at a loss when it comes to picking the right trek. Sure, there are mountains everywhere, but which ones can you actually climb? Where do you park? How long will they take?
For these questions and more, I suggest turning to the Washington Trails Association's Twitter. @WTA_hikers provides residents of the Sound with articles about hiking, gear sales, missing hiker alerts, and other news pertaining to the great outdoors, in addition to offering suggestions for hikes, complete with links and maps, and fundraising for parks and trail maintenance.
@WTA_hikers has also been a handy resource this summer, with the launch of the Discover Pass, guiding folks through the somewhat complicated world of pay-as-you-park state parks.
Do be warned, though: following @WTA_hikers will make you want to bunk off early and head for the hills. But we're sure you've still got some vacation days left, right?
