Can't Miss It: Thursday
STICKS N STONES: Two Seattle hard rock bands go head to head in a family feud style battle of the brains in hopes of taking home wads of cash and mounds of glory. Akimbo and Helms Alee compete in Grudge Rock’s first ever rematch. Helms Alee won the first bout between these behemoths way back when. Winner gets the door money, second place takes the consolation, and the audience wins on all fronts when each band bangs out a set during and after the competition.
10 p.m. // The Re-Bar 1114 Howell St. // $8
GET IT: Stand-up comic Eliot Chang begins a three night run in Seattle tonight at the Comedy Underground. Chang, a veteran of the Upright Citizens Brigade, has seen some success since starting standup on a whim in the early 2000s. What started as open mic work in NYC eventually led to a Comedy Central Presents gig in 2010 (here’s a clip). He’s now in the midst of his “Highly Inappropriate” national tour.
8:30 p.m. // Comedy Underground 109 S Washington St. // $10
TRAD JAZZ: “A Night in Treme,” a national concert tour, takes the brass band music of the HBO drama Treme from the small screen to the stage, beginning a four night, seven show stay at Seattle’s Jazz Alley tonight. Treme, the New Orleans neighborhood, is one of the first black neighborhoods in America and the source of brass band tradition. It’s also the inspiration for the TV series, which is set in the months following hurricane Katrina when residents of the city rebuilt their lives and culture. The concert, presented in association with the series, features the Rebirth Brass Band, saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr., trumpeter James Andrews, and trombonist Glen David.
7:30 p.m. // Jazz Alley 2033 6th Ave // $26.50
CRAWLING FOR LIFE: If only all charity could be as fun as the Lifelong AIDS Alliance Pub Crawl. Tonight, 5 Capitol Hill bars will be participating in this fundraising event--and each will donate 15% of profits from the crawl. Participating bars are Pony, Auto Battery, Julia's on Broadway, the Baltic Room, and the Madison Pub. Head to any one of these spots to get your drink on and pledge your support to the good folks at Lifelong.
