ZooNooz: It's Time for Fecal Fest

September is fast approaching, and while it's a busy month for parents and kids, it's also a one of the best times of year to get in touch with the folks at the Woodland Park Zoo. Why's that, you ask? One reason: poop.

The Fall Fecal Fest is the kind of fascinating activtity that only Seattleites could possibly be into. Essentially, during the month of September, greenthumbs among us can write a postcard to the Zoo. The postcard enters them into a lottery to possibly purchase some coveted Zoo Doo or Bedspread--garden fertilizer, made with animal excrement.

The fertilizer, which comes by the truck, bag, or garbage can, is a scoop-it-yourself situation. That is, those who are chosen to receive the stuff can then go to the zoo, take a shovel, and start piling poop into their respective receptacles. Which may make many turn up their nose, but think of the upside: next summer, when you're feeding your friends the curly kale and tomatoes you grew in your own raised bed full of Zoo Doo, you'll know it was worth it.

Fecal Fest begins on September 1, and official entry rules are online. Send the Zoo a postcard now, and let them know you'd like their, um, end results.
